Senior Accountant


POSITION: Full-time, Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Finance/Accounting

REPORTS TO: Assistant Controller


The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta works to inspire and lead our region toward equity and shared prosperity for all who call our region home. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Accountant provides oversight relating to general ledger accounting and supports financial reporting services for the Foundation and its supporting organizations and drives continuous improvement throughout the department in support of the Foundation objectives.

The Senior Accountant’s responsibilities mainly include: overseeing cash transfers and weekly payment process including credit card and expense reimbursements; overseeing and reviewing journal entries, cash receipts, and recurring payroll entries; managing the quarterly receivable process to Foundation affiliates; review monthly allocation and closing entries; reviewing monthly grant and accounts payable reconciliations; review the preparation and distribution of all Forms 1099-MISC; provide support for the annual audit and federal tax return; prepare annual budget entries for input into the accounting system; and prepare various financial reports for the  Assistant Controller, Controller, and CFO. The Senior Accountant is a member of a financial reporting team that services the Foundation and its Affiliates and participates in meeting the accounting and reporting responsibilities for all entities.


Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Responsible for supporting the full cycle accounting process of the Foundation’s traditional funds and institutional donors.
  • Oversee the processing of corporate credit card and employee reimbursement process for both the Foundation and supporting organizations.
  • Assist with treasury functions related to accounts payable for ACH/wire template setup, positive pay, management of outstanding checks, and other items to support the team.
  • Monitor and review submitted payment requests, if any, for payments to U.S. resident and non-U.S. resident consultants and entities to determine whether applicable withholding tax is necessary.
  • Review journal entries to record general ledger activity, cash receipts, cash disbursements; travel expense reports, affiliate rebills, and monthly closing entries.
  • Review general journal, cash receipts, and recurring semi-monthly payroll entries for all entities prepared by Staff Accountant including QTE transfer requests from Human Resources.
  • Assist with the setup of new investment accounts in the general ledger by Fund.
  • Review the reconciliation of various monthly balance sheet accounts including planned gifts, other non-investment assets, and gift and grant sub-ledgers to the general ledger as prepared by Staff Accountant.
  • In conjunction with Senior Accountant-Shared Services and Supporting Organizations, review and prepare annual budget entries for all entities to be imported into accounting system as prepared by the Staff Accountant.
  • Review the preparation and distribution of all the Forms 1099-MISC for the Foundation at year-end to recipients and Internal Revenue Service.
  • Prepare and provide our auditors with various lead and supporting schedules, accounting details, and provide assistance in the preparation of the annual audit and federal tax return for the Foundation.
  • Prepare materials necessary to meet monthly and annual financial reporting needs of the Foundation.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Controller on tasks delegated to the accounting team by monitoring the accurate and timely completion of such tasks and projects and provide guidance as necessary.
  • Generate various ad hoc financial reports for the Assistant Controller, Controller, and CFO.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the field of accounting, financial reporting, and tax compliance.
  • Perform such other accounting duties as may be required to fulfill the responsibilities of other accounting personnel, in their absence, or as needed.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance to the Accounting Staff as needed.
  • Develop, mentor, cross-train, and lead accounting staff members through direct management and support. Analyze processes and controls; propose and implement improvements.
  • Act as liaison with the Foundation bank contacts,  accounting department vendors, and teams within the organization as required.
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Controller and Controller.


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • A minimum of five years accounting experience, with at least two years of nonprofit experience.
  • Sound knowledge of general accounting principles and nonprofit-specific accounting procedures
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word and the ability to effectively utilize accounting software
  • Ability to generate data from an accounting system to prepare detailed financial reports and analyze statistical and financial information
  • Sound leadership skills to effectively manage, develop and support staff in their growth Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and results oriented
  • Self-starter with initiative to proactively investigate discrepancies and offer process improvements
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills (listening, interpersonal, oral, written)
  • Proficient writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to gather and organize information appropriate
  • Excellent ability to organize and prioritize daily work, multiple requests or assignments, and deadlines, while managing long-term assignments
  • A high degree of professionalism, confidence, and flexibility that allows the incumbent to work collaboratively and effectively with stakeholders and colleagues of diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent ability to work well in a team environment, and maintain a good working relationship with staff, vendors, auditors, donors, financial institutions, and nonprofit partners

All employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (medical and religious exemption accommodation possible) within 30 days of hire.  The Foundation operates in a hybrid working environment with staff working in-office three days per week and the opportunity to work two days remote per week, if in good standing. 



To be determined based upon experience and qualifications. This position is currently being benchmarked with an anticipated salary range of $85,000-$90,000 This position is exempt, and employee is eligible for the Foundation’s competitive health and benefits plan that includes:
