The Spiritual Health CPE Internship at Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center provides an opportunity to learn the theory and practice of spiritual care in a clinical setting.

CPE training focuses on spiritual care in a pluralistic / interfaith context. Individuals from all religious, spiritual, and philosophical backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Ordination by a faith community is not required to participate.

Each unit of CPE training is 400 hours in duration (100 hours of structured education and 300 hours of clinical experience in spiritual care).


The CPE Internship is a non-stipend training position. The program application fee is $25. The tuition cost is $650 for each unit of CPE training.

Internship Dates:

Full Time: May 28, 2024 - August 9, 2024

  • 1 unit of CPE training
  • 32 hours of clinical experience and 8 hours of education each week
  • 11 week unit, including orientation
  • Mixed ACPE outcome level group

Part Time: Oct 7, 2024 - April 18, 2025

  • 1 unit of CPE training
  • 12 hours of clinical experience and 4 hours of education each week
  • 26 week unit
  • Mixed ACPE outcome level group

Weekly education takes place with a small cohort of peers (typically between 3 - 6 students) and an ACPE certified educator.

In addition to group education, students meet individually with the educator throughout the internship for personalized education.

The CPE Internship is an educational training program. Participation requires time beyond the 400 hours for completion of weekly writing assignments and projects.

Typical clinical experiences:

CPE interns support the work of the Spiritual Health department at Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center and partner with an experienced team of professional staff chaplains

  • Responding to the emotional or spiritual distress of patients, families, and staff
  • Supporting patients and families at the end of life
  • Responding to critical care situations in the hospital (e.g. Code Blues)
  • Supporting the interdisciplinary team in the emergency department as they care for trauma patients and their families
  • Assisting with Advance Care Planning
