Position Overview: Third Plateau, a growing multi-disciplinary social impact consulting firm, is looking for a self-directed professional to serve as a Senior Director of Human Resources on our Operations team. The Senior Director will lead key pieces of the employee lifecycle, such as talent management, employee relations, and compensation and benefits oversight and administration. The Senior Director will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Associate Director of Human Resources to ensure our systems and processes are effectively meeting the needs of the larger team while also working efficiently for the Operations team. Top candidates will be highly organized self-starters, able to work under tight deadlines, able to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously, and be hungry to learn.

Location: Remote, with access to office space in the Bay Area. California residency strongly preferred, but deep experience working for a California-based company will be considered.  Please note that being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment at Third Plateau, as we are not able to sponsor applicants for work visas at this time. 

Starting Annual Salary (Exempt):  $130,000 - $160,000 

A compensation committee of at least one department head, co-founder, and the COO will meet to discuss potential starting salary within the band by weighing the candidate's expected contribution in terms of previous experience and expertise against current Third Plateau employees. We commit to sharing the reasoning used to determine starting salary with you. The expectation is not for new team members to be hired with a starting salary at the top of the band, but to have a salary that adequately compensates experience and expertise while countering pay inequality and upholding internal parity.

The ideal candidate will maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies, and incorporate this knowledge into the work of the department. Functionally, candidates should bring a track record of refining HR policies and success in building HR systems in a mission-driven startup, or complex and growing organization. The Sr. Director of Human Resources will serve as a member of a team developing and executing HR strategies that align with the organization’s goals and supervising the Associate Director of Human Resources.  

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Talent Management (40%) 
    • Lead strategy and execution of implementing the appropriate platforms, systems, policies, internal controls, and operating standards. 
    • Partner in the development of our human capital strategy by working closely with COO, CFO, and department heads. 
    • Design, implement, and regularly update policies and practices that promote equity and belonging throughout the employee lifecycle, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and industry best practices.    
    • Oversee recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and offboarding in partnership with the Associate Director of Human Resources. 
    • Lead annual review and performance management process in partnership with the Associate Director of Human Resources. 
    • Work with external consultants and legal counsel to manage processes and policies, ensure compliance, and mitigate risk for employees living in multiple states across the United States. 
    • Maintain the current employee handbook. 
    • Serve as point of contact for employment verifications and other compliance pieces for personnel. 
    • Ensure labor laws in all states are followed regarding onboarding, leaves of absence, wage & hour, separation & labor law postings Safety & Workers' Comp compliance. 
    • Participate in conversations with department heads on career pathways and staffing.  


  • Employee Relations and Engagement (25%) 
    • Authentically engage with equity and belonging policy team to implement programs and initiatives that enhance employee engagement and promote a sense of belonging.   
    • Lead any conflict resolutions as needed in partnership with the management team. 
    • Serve as lead conducting internal investigations and risk assessments, in partnership with legal counsel, to ensure people and processes are compliant and consistent with Third Plateau policies and procedures.  
    • Work in partnership with the key partners of the leadership team (vice presidents, COO, CFO, cofounders) on the execution of employee engagement initiatives.  
    • Monitor and analyze employee feedback to identify areas for improvement and implement responsive initiatives. 


  • Compensation/Benefits Oversight and Administration (25%) 
    • Provide compensation and benefits planning and analysis to ensure we are providing a cost effective and comprehensive benefits program that supports recruitment and retention of high-performing staff.  
    • Work with Associate Director of HR to manage relationships with benefits brokers (e.g., FSA/Medical/Workers Comp). 
    • Plan the coordination, administration, and reporting of annual compensation programs including researching market trends to making recommendations for enhancements, improvements, and increased competitiveness. 
    • Lead compensation, promotion, and discretionary bonus processes in partnership with COO, a Third Plateau co-founder, and department heads.  
    • Oversee the execution of the open enrollment processes. 
    • Oversee proper execution of semi-monthly including auditing/approving payrolls and serving as back-up for Associate Director of Human Resources running payroll.  
    • Serve as an administrator on the firm’s 401k plan. 
  • Organizational Stewardship (10%) 
    • Tend to internal administrative items (e.g., emails/slack, timekeeping, expenses, HR). 
    • Participate in internal activities (i.e., full team meetings, peer learning communities, culture building activities, and regular check-ins with your supervisor) 
    • Engage in individual and team wide professional development/learning opportunities. 
    • Supervise staff (Associate Director of Human Resources). 


  • 7-10+ years of professional experience in human resources including time navigating complex and confidential conversations. 
  • Deep experience working for a California-based company. 
  • Experience in building/improving systems, and implementing effective change management for remote, multi-state personnel. 
  • Experience working effectively with partners who are diverse with respect to age, race, ethnicity, gender orientation, socio-economic status, nationality, religion, and culture.   
  • The ability to create authentic relationships and work across internal departments to foster relations, community, and company cohesion. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, paired with the ability to be calm and focused when juggling multiple projects and deadlines. 
  • The ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding payroll, benefits and other sensitive HR information. 
  • Excellent skills in listening, writing, and oral communication. 
  • Human resource credentials, such as SHRM or SPHR, are preferred but not required.
