SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a full-time, year-round dynamic Program Assistant to help expand the Museum’s new Maritime Adventure Program (MAP), which is part of the Museum’s Center for Experiential Education. The mission of the Center for Experiential Education (CEE) is to engage under-resourced youth in experiential maritime education anchored in positive youth development to help them enhance their social, emotional, and leadership skills. Students who participate in the Maritime Adventure Program learn skills in marine carpentry, sailing and rowing, powerboating, practical astronomy and navigation, and maritime heritage and marine conservation. These skills are built on a foundation of positive youth development and mentoring. The Program Assistant will work closely with the Coordinator of MAP to recruit youth participants, develop and implement curriculum and activities, and implement staff and participant training on leadership and positive youth development. Successful candidates are energetic role models who enjoy working with youth and having fun while at work.
Essential Job Functions
Youth Development
- Design and facilitate highly engaging learning experiences Provide opportunities for youth leadership, voice, and empowerment Create and maintain a safe space for youth and implement strategies for social emotional wellbeing
Participant Recruitment and Community Engagement
- Work with schools and community organizations to recruit youth to participate in programming. Engage in community outreach to build and maintain relationships with a diverse array of organizations and individuals to further goals of the Center for Experiential Education and the Maritime Adventure Program.
Program Management and Operations
- Research, develop, plan, and implement age-appropriate programs for youth based on a Positive Youth Development framework, including rowing, sailing, and marine carpentry Provide mentorship and support to assist participants in addressing presenting issues and motivate youth in their decision making process. Participate in planning, implementation and staffing for all youth programming, including weekend and weekday evening events Facilitate staff trainings around effective positive youth development practices
Qualifications
- Experience in youth development/youth services with proven ability to engage and motivate youth of varied backgrounds Coursework or experience in recreation management, adventure therapy, outward bound and/or maritime programming with youth preferred Coursework of experience in marine carpentry, rowing, sailing, and/or experiential education preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems in a positive manner Ability to relate to youth while also maintaining professional distance Strong leadership and mentor skills A self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills Grounded and flexible
