Job Details

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), an established San Francisco-based nonprofit organization defending online privacy and free expression, is looking for an organized and enthusiastic Event Coordinator to join EFF’s fundraising team and bring the digital rights community together.

The ideal candidate has organized successful public-facing programs, is meticulous and detail-oriented, is an excellent communicator, and is passionate about strengthening the movement to protect civil liberties and human rights. The Event Coordinator plays a key role in bringing the world into EFF’s public interest legal work, activism, and tech development.

We value candidates who bring diverse experiences and perspectives, professional and otherwise, to our team and to EFF as a whole. If you can support EFF’s Development Team with your expertise, please apply.

What You’ll Do

The Event Coordinator, under the supervision of the Director of Member Engagement, is responsible for the following:

  • Lead event planning and implementation for in-person gatherings from 30-person happy hours to EFF’s annual awards ceremony, which may feature hundreds of supporters.
  • Coordinate virtual gatherings from intimate Zoom chats with EFF activists to Twitch livestreams with full panels of digital rights experts. You’ll draw on the expertise of the fundraising and program teams to create exciting content.
  • Write promotional copy and oversee communications that get attendees hype about internet freedom.
  • Support the membership unit and larger Development Team as we build strategies to connect with technology users around the world.

Who You Are & Keys to Success (The Must-Haves)

To be successful in this job, you will excel in these areas:

  • Confident wrangler of contracts, vendors, and internal stakeholders. You’re an inclusive communicator who anticipates needs, keeps everyone on the same page, and makes sure the ship moves forward.
  • Expert juggler of deadlines and priorities. You are an outcome-driven, shrewd decision maker. You never sweat the details (because you’ve got them all mapped out!). Bump in the road? No problem. You’ve got a backup plan for that. With at least 7 EFF events of varying sizes over the year, your organizational skills and foresight keep it all on track.
  • Committed to justice and a better future for technology. You’re a great event planner who also cares about protecting the rights and freedoms of all people.

If You Were Here Right Now, You Would Be:

  • Reviewing and updating vendor contracts—or seeking out proposals for alternatives.
  • Putting finishing touches on a concise line item budget for a summer program.
  • Messaging your contact on the Public Interest Technology Team to make sure his trivia questions fit on the slide deck.
  • Getting approval on the menu options for this month’s major donor gathering.
  • Logging into our CRM to create an event invitation for Bay Area residents.

What Else You Should Know

This position is based in San Francisco. Because we are highly collaborative and value our in-person time together, applicants seeking to work remotely will not be considered.

As an advocacy organization, EFF is committed to being part of a diverse community. Diversity of life experiences makes a big difference in how we identify and litigate legal issues, design privacy-enhancing software, and organize our activism. To that end, we deliberately seek applicants with different perspectives, identities, and experiences to build an inclusive workplace to better inform our advocacy and defense of freedom in our digital world. EFF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people of all races, genders, ages, abilities, orientations, ethnicities, and national origins to apply.
