Description

SUMMARY

The Industrial Hygienist (IH) works under the supervision of a senior industrial hygienist to provide industrial hygiene expertise to the California Department of Public Health Occupational Health Branch COVID-19 Team (OHB Team) for exposure assessment and prevention of COVID-19 in an occupational health context. The OHB Team is a multi-disciplinary group consisting of physicians, epidemiologists, industrial hygienists, health educators, and administrative staff.

Duties include participating in consultations to local and environmental health departments and Cal/OSHA teams conducting on-site exposure assessments in settings experiencing an outbreak; designing and implementing exposure and worksite evaluations to be conducted by the OHB Team or in collaboration with partners; generating and updating protocols and specifications for protecting individuals in workplace and other congregate settings; making recommendations for strategies and policies to minimize risk of transmission across various exposure settings; responding to requests for subject matter expertise; and studying unique exposure scenarios that contribute to the scientific understanding of the transmission properties of SARS-CoV-2.

The IH may participate in on-site and virtual consultations to workplaces, correctional facilities, and schools related to indoor air quality and ventilation or other measures that may uniquely impact transmission in those settings. Additionally, the IH may work on special projects, such as assessing and assisting industry sectors at higher risk for outbreaks; providing training and creating training materials related to indoor air quality, the use of portable air cleaners, and respiratory protection; and translating lessons learned in industrial hygiene from the COVID-19 pandemic to other occupational respiratory illness and preparation efforts to respond to future novel respiratory diseases in the occupational setting.

Most work done by the IH will occur during standard business hours. However, as the nature of the pandemic is ever-changing, issues occasionally arise after-hours or over the weekend that need to be addressed in real-time. The IH may be asked to travel to a local health jurisdiction managing a workplace outbreak to provide an on-site assessment of the workplace that could support recommendations made by CDPH or to study a unique aspect of a workplace that could be beneficial when managing future outbreaks, for example, an assessment of ventilation systems commonly found in a certain industry.

Applicants must submit a cover letter that explains their interest in and qualifications for the position and curriculum vitae to be considered.

The salary range for this position is $80,000/year to $89,424/year depending on experience/qualifications.

If hired for this position, you will be required to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to your start date or have a valid religious or medical reason qualifying you for an exemption (that may or may not require an accommodation).
