POSITION: Full Time Misdemeanor Attorney Manager
LOCATION: This position will be based in the Criminal Defense section in our downtown Portland office. Job requires appearances at the Multnomah County Courthouse, jail visits, and in-office meetings.
COMPENSATION: Salary from $72,736.73 to $122,701.72 depending on experience. Note – this is a management position ineligible for union membership.

This role is designed to be a part of a cross departmental Management Team, joining the Executive Director, Juvenile Attorney Manager, Major Felony Attorney Manager, Minor Felony Attorney Manager, Trial Assistant Manager, and Operations Manager in setting client-centered office policy and supporting MDI employees. The position will work with attorneys in the Misdemeanor Trial unit in both MDI’s downtown and Eastside offices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Membership in the Oregon State Bar;
2.Zealous and competent advocate for public defense clients;
3.Works well with others collaborating, coordinating, and problem-solving;
4.Knowledge and familiarity with Multnomah County criminal defense practice and a reputationfor modeling professionalism within the legal community.
Responsibilities specific to MDI Attorney Management
Supervise misdemeanor attorneys:
•Provide support and advice to beginner attorneys as they build their skills communicating with clients, navigating office resources, issue-spotting police reports, researching and writing motions, connecting with social service providers and experts, negotiating with the district attorney’s office, and advocating in the courtroom.
•Meet with each attorney on team on a weekly basis to assess the attorney’s workload and new case capacity for the following week.
•Run weekly misdemeanor meetings.
•Organize docket coverage for CPC, trial readiness, and arraignments and have a large presence on these dockets to keep your finger on the pulse of case and workloads.
•Conduct annual performance reviews.
•Assist attorneys to resolve professional conflicts, including but not limited to, staffing conflict checks, navigating internal resources, supporting MDI attorneys in issues with the court or district attorney’s office, and intercepting calls from clients in need
Training
•Collaborate with MDI’s Attorney Trainer to identify training needs and create training opportunities and programs for MDI attorneys; and
•Collaborate with other defense practitioners to build training resources including: MDI employees, OPDS employees, MPD attorneys, OCDLA, MDI Attorney Trainer, and outside resources.
Participate in stakeholder meetings
•MDI manager meetings;
•Multnomah County’s Monthly Misdemeanor Meeting;
•Internal Office Attorney meetings;
•Monthly defense bar meeting
•Domestic Violence court workgroup;
•Pretrial Operations workgroup;
•East county operations
Direct representation
•Carry a .5 FTE caseload of mostly misdemeanor cases;
•Create opportunities for misdemeanor attorneys to second-chair cases headed to trial
