The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley (LFSV) advances the rights of historically excluded individuals and families across Santa Clara County through legal services, strategic advocacy, and educational outreach. We serve over 10,000 individuals and families each year through our Housing Program, Children & Youth Program, and Health Program. Our attorneys, social workers, and advocates use legal advocacy as a tool for social change by crafting inventive solutions to the legal issues facing low-income people in our region.

With a staff of 90 employees, we are the largest provider of free legal services in the South Bay region of the Bay Area. What You’ll Do

The Staff Accountant will assist in fulfilling the day-to-day and monthly financial and operational tasks of the organization. The Staff Accountant is an integral part of the Finance Team and works closely with colleagues throughout the organization and outside vendors. This position requires strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, independent follow-through, critical thinking skills and the ability to collaboratively work.

Primary Duties

As Staff Accountant, you will:

Accounts Receivable/Payable

  • Be responsible for all areas of the payment processing cycle while ensuring accuracy 
  • Serve as the primary contact for all payment, vendor inquiries and reporting requirements.  
  • Manage all payment issues including stop payments and O/S check matters 
  • Maintain processes and controls of accounting transactions according to GAAP and pertinent sections of the Collective Bargaining Agreement 
  • Ensure proper payment documentation is maintained 
  • Organizational point person for expense coding and guidance 
  • Record all receipts in a timely manner 
  • Responsible for all Client Trust Account accounting activity, including, deposits and withdrawals and quarterly reporting 
  • Manage and processes Family Law billings and related collections 
  • Regularly review for accuracy of AR and bank report

Cash Receipts and Receivables

  • Records all receipts in a timely manner
  • Responsible for all Client Trust Account accounting activity, including, deposits and withdrawals and quarterly reporting
  • Regularly reviews for accuracy of AR and bank reports 

General

  • Monthly reporting 
  • Assist in preparing monthly journal entries, invoicing, and account reconciliations
  • Support annual budgeting planning and monthly forecast process
  • Generate reports and prepare documentation in support of contract invoicing, donation reconciliation, annuals audits, and other key accounting functions
  • Contribute to improving department and cross functional processes to increase accuracy and efficiency
  • Support complex financial projects or initiatives as requested to address evolving organizational needs
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant contractual procedures and practices

Perform other duties and special projects as required. 

Who You Are

To be successful in this job, you will excel in the following areas:

  • Be an experience accounting professional: three or more years of experience working in accounting and finance, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Have advanced computer skills: Proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook and a plus for familiarity with Paylocity
  • Have knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards
  • An excellent communicator: Strong writing skills and the ability to convey complex messages in a clear and meaningful way, as well as the ability to address issues clearly and in non-confrontational and non-polarizing ways to a range of diverse audiences
  • Be resourceful and innovative, bringing an optimistic and hands-on approach to the team
  • Are a team player who can work collaboratively with a diverse team of administrative and program staff
  • Committed to racial equity, inclusion and belonging and able recognize the ways that race, and other identities intersect in the work, especially for communities we serve

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or Business is required.
