Callanwolde is a community arts center and renowned venue located on a historic 12-acre estate in the heart of metro Atlanta. Our mission is to provide the Atlanta community with premier, accessible arts education, especially to the underserved, while promoting enjoyment of the arts at the historic and inspiring Callanwolde estate.

Reporting to Callanwolde’s Executive Director, this critical position is responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial and accounting activities. The Director of Finance is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of accounting records, financial reporting, annual budgets, insurance, general accounting, and treasury activities. This position is key in insuring that Callanwolde meets its financial goals and objectives.

Position Description:

The Finance Director is directly responsible for the following:

  • Maintains and optimizes Callanwolde’s accounting system; oversees funding sources, restrictions, availabilities, and monthly financial reporting.
  • Maintains adequate financial and operating controls to ensure safeguarding of the assets of the organization. Develops, implements, and maintains accounting policies and procedures.
  • Provides organizational leadership as a high level collaborator supporting the strategic direction and goals of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center.
  • Responsible for the annual budget of the organization; assures that the budget is reviewed by the Finance Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Collaborates on the development of departmental and grant budgets. 
  • Conducts annual and periodic reviews, monitoring operating results against budgets and contractual guidelines. 
  • Responsible for accurate budget input and maintenance in QuickBooks.
  • Works with the Finance Committee to ensure adequate oversight of the financial activities of the organization.  Prepares monthly or bi-monthly financial information presented to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Oversees the annual external financial audit, preparation of the audit report, and completion of IRS Form 990.
  • Prepares routine and ad hoc reports related to overall organizational performance and use and receipt of funds.
  • Collaborates in the administration of insurance policies; assists in evaluating insurance products to ensure they meet Callanwolde’s needs and contractual obligations.
  • Maintains the organization’s system of accounts and records on all transactions and assets: cash, general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Handles bi-weekly payroll through QuickBooks payroll service.
  • Prepares and allocates monthly salary and benefits expenses to all programs.
  • Reviews all disbursements for coding and appropriate approvals.
  • Reviews all bank deposits. Handles monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Performs most transactional and journal entries, delegating as appropriate to part-time accounting assistant.
  • Monitors cash and expected future cash receipts and disbursements to assure the organization is able to meet its future financial obligations in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Prepares month-end and year-end closings.
  • Supervises support staff as needed.
  • Collaborates with other staff to help execute events that require all hands on deck.

This is a salaried, exempt position with an expected workweek of 40 hours. The anticipated schedule for this position is Monday- Friday from 9am- 5pm. This position is a hybrid schedule, and does require on-site work at the beautiful Callanwolde mansion and grounds 4 days a week most weeks. There is some evening and weekend work required.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Master’s degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience and a demonstrated successful track record in a similar role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with board members, donors, volunteers, and staff.
  • A proven leader, some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Detailed oriented with strong analytical abilities and skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Self-starter, takes initiative, recognizes a sense of urgency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated core competency skills with Mac Outlook, Excel, Word and Powerpoint.
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission of Art for All.
  • Ability to identify and resolve system and management-level issues.
  • Adapts easily to working in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Familiarity with non-profit accounting.

DeKalb County now owns and maintains the property today, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Callanwolde Foundation has operated the Arts Center since 1983.
