The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley (LFSV) invites paralegals with a passion for social justice and experience working in a fast-paced environment to apply for the open paralegal position on our Legal Advocates for Children and Youth (LACY) team.

Who We Are

The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley advances the rights of historically excluded individuals and families across Santa Clara County through legal services, strategic advocacy, and educational outreach. We serve over 10,000 individuals and families each year through our Housing Program, Children & Youth Program, and Health Program. Our attorneys, social workers, and advocates use legal advocacy as a tool for social change by crafting inventive solutions to the legal issues facing low-income people in our region.

With a staff of 90 employees, we are the largest provider of free legal services in the South Bay region of the Bay Area. As a staff, we actively engage in discussions about race, equity, and inclusion, and are actively working towards a Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)-centered legal services practice that incorporates community and movement lawyering. 

What You’ll Do

The Legal Advocates for Children and Youth program of the Law Foundation is seeking a full-time paralegal for our immigration team. The paralegal will collaborate with attorneys in advocating on behalf of children and youth seeking affirmative immigration relief, primarily in the form of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS). The paralegal will be responsible for managing the physical and electronic case files for the LACY team and will prepare legal documents for attorneys, maintain a calendaring system for cases, and may file documents with the court. The paralegal will assist with translation and interpretation services, including helping with initial client interviews and other administrative tasks. This position will require participation in LACY’s regular team meetings, staff meetings, and program development activities, including assisting the LACY Directing Attorney and Supervising Attorneys with contract reporting.

Primary Duties

  • Provide administrative and litigation support to attorneys including case file maintenance and filing documents with the court
  • Prepare legal documents such as judicial council forms, immigration forms and declarations
  • Interview clients and gather facts about their case
  • File (e-file) and service court documents
  • Run and create reports
  • Interpretation and translation
  • Present at community outreach events
  • Strategize and identify different client needs and goals
  • Provide general support to multiple attorneys including but not limited to mailing documents, providing updates to clients, and attending team meetings 

Who You Are

This position is a good fit for you if you have:

  • Experience with legal case management, case filing, e-filing, and service
  • Experience handling detail-oriented administrative tasks 
  • Ability to interact professionally with office staff, clients, court staff and community partners
  • Ability to manage and maintain a calendar
  • Ability to manage and maintain case files, both physical files and electronic files 
  • Ability to be flexible, to multi-task and to take direction from multiple sources
  • Experience working with individuals from multi-ethnic communities
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Experience working individually and as part of a team
  • Experience using Microsoft Office: Access, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Bilingual capabilities (English and Spanish)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Paralegal certification
  • Valid California Driver’s License

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent use of computer keyboard
  • Use of office equipment, such as copier and printer

What We Offer

The salary range for this role is $26.10 to $40.67/hour. All compensation is determined by the wage table of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between SEIU Local 521 and LFSV. Placement on the wage table will be based upon an applicant’s experience in comparable roles. The salary scale can be found on our LFSV Salary Scale 2022 – 2023. Location

Law Foundation is a hybrid workplace and staff will be required to commute to our San Jose offices 2+ days per week. If staff can meet the requirements above, including commuting at their own expense, staff may live anywhere in California. Due to logistical challenges regarding taxes, insurance, and time zones, we are not able to consider staff in other states at this time.
