The National Center for Civil and Human Rights (NCCHR) is seeking a Head of Programs.  The right candidate is a dynamic and talented individual with a background in the civil and human rights field to lead our substantive program work on education, interpretation, civic engagement, facilitated conversations and training experiences (for diversity, equity and inclusion, law enforcement and advocacy).  Someone with a strong background in program development and implementation, staff and project management, and motivating and leading department directors.  

This positions provides the opportunity for hybrid work with a mix of in-office and remote work ability.

 

Summary of Job

The Head of Programs is responsible for implementing our program offerings, ensuring best in class delivery, and overseeing the development of new initiatives.  The position will manage the directors or managers leading each of The Center’s respective programs and initiatives, and provide guidance to these directors and managers to lead and develop their teams.  Our current programs and initiatives are:

  • Education
  • Exhibitions
  • Public Engagement
  • Truth + Transformation
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Experiences
  • REPAIR Human Rights Training for Law Enforcement
  • LGBTQ Institute

Reports to:  President & Chief Executive Officer

Responsibilities

  • Work with our internal program departmental directors in supervision and support of our current programs and initiatives, and their teams, to ensure messaging and delivery consistent with The Center’s mission and vision
  • Work closely with the Development department to prepare funding proposals and program grant reporting
  • Provide guidance, oversight and direction to team creating and delivering educational (K-12 and university) resources and curricular materials. 
  • Work with Interpretation team in creation of educational materials based on exhibitions and civil rights history
  • Provide guidance, oversight and direction to Center directors leading programmatic initiatives such as Truth + Transformation
  • Provide oversight to teams creating and delivering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) experiences and law enforcement trainings (REPAIR)
  • Work collaboratively with Visitor Services, Marketing, and Events to ensure programming is delivered seamlessly
  • Coordinate and facilitate professional development education for staff under your supervision.
  • Develop and undertake comprehensive qualitative and quantitative assessment and evaluation (impact) of our programming
  • Serve as member of organization’s core leadership team, participating in thought leadership and decision-making for the organization as a whole
  • Participate in reporting and communications with our Board of Directors
  • Coordinate with CEO, COO and HR Director to determine staffing needs, develop job descriptions, interview candidates, and create standards of excellence for staff working in program departments

 

Core Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, Master’s degree in a relevant subject preferred
  • Experience with budgeting, cost projections, and managing a budget
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in program development in the civil and human rights field or related areas
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in team leadership, with the ability to motivate, mentor, and identify growth opportunities for staff
  • Training and experience with best practices in building educational programs
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. history on race relations and civil rights advocacy
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to manage conflict and difficult conversations with professionalism and discretion
  • Project management and problem-solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of widely used workplace technology tools such as MS Office, Adobe, CRMS database, etc.
