Position Summary

The Habitat Restoration Coordinator will assist in the implementation of habitat restoration and related conservation programming under the direction of the Habitat Program Manager and Director of Conservation. This will primarily come in the form of active field work, volunteer and restoration coordination, as well as all facets of logistics. There is an expectation that in the future, the Habitat Restoration Coordinator will supervise other restoration staff, contractors, and interns when appropriate.

Position Duties

●        Coordinate, organize, and assist with all aspects of habitat restoration, field workdays, volunteer events, and other tasks and projects as assigned by the Habitat Program Manager.

●        Complete project tracking and administrative work in a timely manner.

●        Carryout restoration work and maintain natural areas across Georgia, primarily in the Piedmont region. Specific field tasks include invasive species identification, monitoring, and control (herbicide application and cutting/mowing), hand pulling undesirable species, native seeding and planting, prescribed burning, brush/tree removal, erosion control methods, mowing, watering, and various other related tasks.

●        Assist Habitat Restoration Specialist in operating, caring for, and conducting routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and tools that include light and heavy-duty trucks, trailers, chainsaws/brushsaws, backpack herbicide sprayers, UTVs/ATVs, skid-steers, and tractors.

●        Communicate status of projects to the Habitat Program Manager and work with the Habitat Restoration Specialist to carry out and complete assigned projects and tasks.

●        Train, communicate with, and oversee staff and volunteers for habitat programs, workdays, and some educational programs. This may include directing temporary labor from an outside third party.

●        Implement a safety-first mindset and apply all established health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) standards during all office and field operations.

●        Ensure that habitat restoration and conservation activities are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision, and work plan.

●        Adhere to the highest ethical standards for habitat management and monitoring.

●        Establish constructive relationships with staff, partners, board members, and constituents.

●        Travel regularly during field season with some weekend and evening work required.

●        Other tasks as assigned by the Habitat Program Manager or Director of Conservation.

●        Ability to walk 4-6 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.

●        Ability to work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

●        Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, vibration and loud noises. Exposure to thorny or poisonous plant materials and other hazards is not uncommon in the field.

●        Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance or crawl while conducing field work.

●        Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

●        Ability to be thoughtful, thorough, and proactive in all work processes.

Position Qualifications

●        2 to 4 years of experience in a natural resources field; or relevant field experience in ecology and land management; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education, or training.

●        Solid understanding of basic ecological restoration techniques.

●        General knowledge of Georgia native and invasive species, plant identification, natural areas, and ecology preferred, with a focus on the Piedmont region

●        Coordination experience or demonstrated proficiency in organized planning and scheduling

●        Verbal and written communication skills

●        Leadership experience and/or strong interpersonal and customer service skills

●        Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

●        Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

●        Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of other organizations.

●        Demonstrated ability to multi-task, work under pressure, meet deadlines and be able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment.

●        Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

●        Experience working with volunteers or young adults.

●        Keen attention to detail and ability to generate accurate data.

Certifications/Trainings (If you do not have any of these, you must be open and able to obtain them)

●        Valid driver’s license

●        National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Fire Intro (S-130 / S-190 / L-180)

●        Georgia Pesticide Applicator’s License

●        ATV / UTV and chainsaw safety training

●        Wilderness First-Aid

Status, Pay & Benefits

The successful candidate will be hired as a full-time, 40-hour per week exempt employee. The employee is expected to work 40 hours per week, including occasional weekends or weeknights, and pay will be starting in the mid $30,000 annually, including paid time off.
