Alternate ROOTS supports the creation and presentation of original art that is rooted in community, place, tradition or spirit. We are a group of artists and cultural organizers based in the US South creating a better world together. The Development Associate supports the organization’s overall fundraising and development goals. The Development Associate assists with the management of the organization’s donor/funder relationship cultivation strategies; leads research, data collection, and analysis; and assists in implementing effective fundraising campaigns. The Development Associate reports to the Director of Development.

Essential Job Functions & Key Outcomes

  • Work with the Director of Development to manage and grow the ROOTS philanthropic family and donor base.
  • Work closely with the Membership team to optimize CRM software integration throughout the organization.

  • Work closely with the Development Director to optimize Monday.com project management implementation.

  • Participate in donor/funder prospect research and coordinate relationship cultivation with new and existing donors and funders.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Development to implement fundraising strategies in line with the organization’s fund development plan.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date information pertaining to funders/donors, deadlines, and records.

  • Assist with compiling information for grant proposals and reports.

  • Coordinate accurate and up-to-date development calendar and send notifications as needed to internal staff for deadlines, grant reports, and new grant opportunities.

  • Support the organization’s grant writer in maintaining compliance with awarded grants, including communicating funding requirements to appropriate staff and ensuring the timely submission of required statistical and narrative reports.

  • Conduct ongoing research related to current and new institutional and individual donors.

  • Schedule donor/funder meetings as needed.

  • Supports Development Director in collaborating with the Communications team to amplify ROOTS’ impact and the work of our members in the region. 

  • Assists with the implementation of the year-round donor communications and digital marketing strategy. 

  • Composes donor letters and thank you notes to ROOTS’ individual supporters in a timely manner.

  • Support the Development Director in fundraising strategies together with ROOTS' community-building initiatives and regional events.

  • Manage evaluation and assessment projects in support of understanding ROOTS’ organizational impact and our members’ reach.

  • Support member-driven learning exchanges and sessions aimed at amplifying the organization’s culture of abundance.

  • Attend and participate in ROOTS’ hosted events including ROOTS Week, ROOTS Weekends, and regional Rhizome gatherings.

  • Support the compilation and management of the team budget.

  • Support team finance administration and operations (creating, submitting, and tracking agreements, check requests, payments, and expense tracking).

  • Prepare agreements as needed for contractors and other service providers.

  • Contribute to organizational development by participating in strategic and long-range planning, representing ROOTS at field-wide conferences, actively participating in maintaining a healthy work culture, providing thought partnership and support for indigenizing/decolonizing work, and supporting ROOTS hosted events and Face-to-Face meetings through attendance, as permitted.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Commitment to work at the intersections of art and social justice movements; familiarity with the language, histories, theories, and practices that undergird this field.
  • Willingness to work within progressive decision-making processes moving toward decolonization and transformative justice practices.

  • Willingness to gain knowledge of the grant funding principles, including pipeline development, grant writing, and compliance.

  • Knowledge of general fundraising principles, including donor prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to give and receive critical feedback and adopt the organization’s processes for giving and receiving feedback. 

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate information in writing and speaking to a wide variety of audiences so that they will understand.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with others.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and build relations with colleagues, coworkers, and others.

  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.

  • Ability to work remotely.

  • Skill in the use of Google Suite, Slack, customer relationship management software, and project management software.

The Development Associate is a full time, 40 hours per week, exempt position that is fully remote. In addition to a competitive salary total compensation includes:

  • A fully remote work environment, with flexibility to meet your schedule
  • 2 weeks vacation (to start), 3 floating holidays, 7 wellness days and 3 weeks of office closure days for holidays and end of the year staff reflection
