Copywriter & Content Developer: Work in the Arts & Social Justice for Alternate ROOTS

Alternate ROOTS supports the creation and presentation of original art that is rooted in community, place, tradition or spirit. We are a group of artists and cultural organizers based in the US South creating a better world together. The Communications Copywriter & Content Developer is responsible for producing all organizational copy and content as well as managing the social media platforms to consistently articulate and advance the mission of the organization. This position works closely with various staff teams to develop copy and content that accurately reflect ROOTS’ programs, events, and initiatives. The Communications Copywriter & Content Developer works to ensure that Alternate ROOTS’ communications support and uplift the work of the organization as well as ROOTS’ membership. 

Essential Job Functions & Key Outcomes

• Create all organizational copy and content for website, digital and email marketing, newsletters, and print publications in alignment with communications strategy and style guidelines.

• Provide first round proofreading and formatting for all copy and content.

• Manage social media platforms; create and post all content, oversee comments and messages, track analytics.

•  Work closely with the Communications Manager to produce work in accordance with team timelines.
• Gather images and produce basic graphics for website, digital and email marketing, using templates provided.
• Support organizational development by participating in strategic and long-range planning, representing ROOTS at field-wide conferences, actively participating in maintaining a healthy work culture, providing thought partnership and support for indigenizing/decolonizing work, and supporting ROOTS hosted events and Face-to-Face meetings through attendance, as permitted.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies

• Excellent writer and content developer; ability to develop copy and content for web, social media, email, and print publications in alignment with communications strategy and programmatic parameters. 

• Knowledge of effective and appropriate communication strategies and practices and the ability to use and adapt that knowledge in various contexts.

• Fluent with social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook as well as Canva.

• Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation. 
• Skill in editing and formatting content and copy in accordance with communications strategy and style guides. Excellent proofreading skills.
• Ability to communicate information in writing and speaking to a wide variety of audiences so they will understand.
• Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
• Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines.
• Ability to work collaboratively and build relations with colleagues, coworkers, and others.
• Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
• Ability to work remotely.
• Skill in the use of Google Suite, Slack, project management software (monday.com), content management software, and LaterApp.
• Commitment to work at the intersections of art and social justice movements; familiarity with the language, histories, theories, and practices that undergird this field.
• Familiarity with southern cultural traditions and social and artistic movement landscape.

The Copywriter & Content Developer is a full time, 40 hours per week, exempt position that is fully remote. In addition to a competitive salary total compensation includes:
