Position Summary

The SF Market’s programs serve our Bay Area community and our merchants and are a core component of advancing The SF market’s mission, vision, and new 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. The Program Manager will develop and oversee a suite of high-impact programs that support our merchants’ success and leverage The SF Market’s unique scale and position to serve as a leader in the regional food and agriculture community. This role requires a keen understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges of a social enterprise model, identifying ways to advance impact within a mission-driven business model. A successful Program Manager will have a strong aptitude for developing and managing the ideas, relationships, and processes to grow and nurture effective programs in areas such as food waste reduction, food access, workforce development and environmental sustainability.

Program Manager Essential Duties

Program Development & Management (60%)

Program Development: Using the priority areas and key goals developed in The SF Market’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, drive the development of new programmatic initiatives. Gather data, conduct research and interview stakeholders to identify opportunities and challenges to new program development. Assess funding potential, pursue funding opportunities, and scope staffing needs. Propose program goals and activities and implement pilot programs.

 Program Management and Evaluation: Oversee existing SF Market programs. Develop and effectively manage program timelines, fulfill all grant reporting requirements, and ensure timely completion of program deliverables. Recruit, hire, train, and manage program staff. Develop, maintain and report progress and metrics for evaluating effectiveness of programs (including but not limited to those articulated in The SF Market’s strategic plan) and propose and execute strategic changes to programs based on evaluation insights.

Budgeting: Oversee program budgets and ensure all aspects of the programs run efficiently and effectively. Develop annual program budget as part of broader organizational budget process, track program expenses, assess program expenditures mid-year and make recommendations to stay on budget.

Fundraising: Ensure program fundraising activities align with the overall strategic plan, goals and financial bottom line of The SF Market. Work will include maintaining existing donor relationships, developing prospects, tracking funding sources, developing funding proposals and ensuring compliance with donation requirements. This aspect of the role will also coordinate with the Fund Development Director.

Strategic Partnerships & External Relations: Maintain existing and identify new strategic partnerships with San Francisco and Bay Area-wide organizations and collaboratives that are directly aligned with The SF Market’s programs. As needed and appropriate, represent the programs to members of the public, government leaders, and members of the media. 

Strategy and Programs Committees (15%)

Provide administrative and strategic support to two high-functioning committees of volunteers as staff liaison. Leverage committee members’ collective experience and perspectives to oversee programmatic work and strategic plan implementation and other strategic market initiatives and decisions, respectively. 

Merchant Programs (25%)

Merchant Survey: refresh and administer an annual survey to Merchants gathering feedback from merchant owners and managers about Market Office communications, services, business optimism, workforce needs, and other topics as appropriate. Examine data and present results to Staff, Board, Committees and Merchants.  Work with the General Manager and SF Market staff to implement recommendations.

Merchant Programming: support the design, development and implementation of programming such as workshops, training, community building events to support the success of Merchant businesses at The SF Market.

Program Manager Qualifications/Requirements

  •  At least 5 years of relevant work experience, ideally in a food-related social enterprise, non-profit or mission-driven business environment
  • Exceptional ability to manage a wide diversity of people and relationships (as a manager, collaborator, and in “managing up”) 
  • A strong belief in the mission and vision of The SF Market
  • Experience with and desire to build new things; a self-starter attitude
  • Experience launching and growing food programs at scale
  • Strong and demonstrated organizational and project management skills, including ability to juggle multiple and competing priorities
  • Strong communication skills,  the ability to identify and respond to nuance and comfort working in ambiguity
  • Significant experience engaging in fund development activities, including cultivating and managing funder relationships; writing grant proposals; producing grant reports
  • Enthusiasm for early mornings
  • Ability to develop and deliver budgets, written communication, and presentations
  • Driving is required, proof of a satisfactory driving record will be required
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in Cantonese or Spanish is a plus
  • Must also be able to:
    • Walk 2-3 miles
    • Lift and move boxes and bags of product up to 50 lbs. by hand and with hand truck
    • Work in a loud, fast paced, physical environment around forklifts, trucks, refrigerated and warehouse spaces

The SF Market team operates in a hybrid work environment. The Program Manager is expected to be in the office three days per week, with options for remote work the other two days.

Compensation + Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $82,000-$92,000, depending on experience. Comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including full health benefits, retirement plan, and three weeks’ vacation in year one of employment.
