THE OPPORTUNITY  

The Arctic Campaigns Director is a strategic thinker that will oversee, facilitate, and implement the League’s campaign work to secure durable protections for the Western Arctic Reserve (Reserve) and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge). This position will serve as a leader both internally and externally in the coalition effort to protect the Reserve and will provide high-level strategic and tactical support to staff leading the Refuge campaign.  Working closely with leading conservation organizations, Indigenous leadership, and partners in environmental justice, outdoor recreation, climate change and other communities, the Director will drive strategy and tactics to advance long-term protections across the Arctic.

The Arctic Campaigns Director will be responsible for the following:  

Advocacy Campaign Strategy & Implementation 

  • Drive the national campaign strategy to stop damaging oil and gas projects and to advance durable, proactive protections for the Reserve, including creating, coordinating and moving strategy on coalition calls and through individual partner outreach

  • Collaborate with the director of the Arctic Refuge Defense Campaign and other partners to execute on political strategy, paid and earned communications, corporate pressure, and other strategies for the Refuge campaign

  • Provide campaign advice and ensure appropriate information coordination and flow among coalition partners to drive strong implementation of shared plans

  • Conduct periodic reviews and update proactive campaign strategies for both the Reserve and Refuge campaigns, identify gaps and needs, and develop tactics to overcome challenges

Coalition Management 

  • Facilitate information sharing and coordination between the Arctic Refuge Coalition and Western Arctic Reserve Coalition, including proactively identifying opportunities for joint or complementary strategies, lobby targeting and messaging, tactics, and messaging

  • Serve as League lead or participant on select external Refuge and Reserve subgroup calls, tracking possible campaign opportunities and attend other campaign-related coalition calls/meetings

  • Engage and build organizational relationships within and outside the coalition to expand the reach, diversity, and effectiveness of the campaign

External Affairs & Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Track, manage, and occasionally author Arctic content including alerts, factsheets, external updates, website content, briefing papers, letters, blog posts and other campaign materials as needed

  • Track, analyze, and manage policy background and research needs, including reports, white papers, and informational memos

  • Drive the League’s rapid response work and contribute to the shared commitments and accountability within the Arctic coalition

  • Advance the League’s work with Indigenous Peoples, including Gwich’in and Inupiaq, in collaboration with Government Affairs Manager

  • Attend campaign activities and events with outreach team

Organizational Collaboration & Leadership

  • Provide lateral internal team management of Reserve and Refuge campaign strategy and work between internal departments (federal advocacy, outreach, communications, Alaska)

  • Lead and participate in regular internal meetings to ensure strategic alignment, achievement of goals, and documentation of actions and next steps

  • Collaborate with the Development Director on securing long-term funding strategies, including drafting foundation applications and reports

  • Manage consultants in support of campaign deliverables and needs

  • Manage and execute $100K internal budget

  • EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES  

    Ideal candidates will have a background and resume that reflect the following:

  • 5+ years experience leading high-level, national advocacy campaigns focused on achieving federal policy objectives.

  • Proven track record of developing and leading broad coalition campaigns

  • Strong understanding of the intersection of policy, advocacy, and politics with experience working in or with Congress

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills that can convey nuanced information successfully to a variety of audiences

  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities while remaining flexible 

  • Direct and lateral management experience and the ability to motivate and guide staff with enthusiasm, leadership, accountability, humility and respect

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice with expert understanding of and ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies and interests

  • Passion for the mission of Alaska Wilderness League and land conservation and advocacy, climate justice, and indigenous rights

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS  
  • 5+ years' experience leading high-level, national federal issue advocacy campaigns

  • Deep understanding of Native American and/or Alaskan Native communities

  • Highest integrity, wisdom, humor, emotional intelligence and can-do attitude; adept at conflict management; even-keeled and calm when leading through challenges

  • LOCATION  

    Washington, DC (Preferred) with the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule.  Remote candidates will be considered. 

    TRAVEL  

    Travel 10% of the year for campaign-related projects. 

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS  

    The salary for this position is $90,000 - $100,000 annually. In addition, Alaska Wilderness League offers an outstanding benefits package to include:
