About the Position

Namati equips people to understand, use, and shape the law to advance justice for their communities. In the US, Namati’s US Environmental Justice program partners with communities and organizers from across the MidAtlantic region (DC, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) to take on grave, inter-connected challenges including environmental injustice, unemployment, and racial and economic inequity. We are assisting overlooked communities with envisioning the changes they want to see for where they live, identifying and pursuing available federal and other funding sources, and where relevant, tracking the implementation of the funding. We’ve also co-founded the MidAtlantic Justice Coalition (MAJC), which is building people power and forging a just society with good economic opportunities and a safe environment.

We are searching for a dynamic Digital Organizer to help us build and activate a broad grassroots base through strategic, online communications. We’re looking for someone who is tenacious and creative with a burning passion for working with communities to advance economic and environmental justice, and all human rights.

The position will be responsible for the following-

Digital organizing:

  • Manage our US Environmental Justice (EJ) program’s social media accounts (for example, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok), including developing social media strategies, creating editorial calendars, sourcing and creating content, and helping us continuously improve our reach and engagement among our diverse target audiences. Respond to messages and comments from social media followers. Track and report on content engagement and social media metrics.
  • Design digital and hard copy promotional materials for organizing and advocacy campaigns, including for specific events and activities.
  • Capture compelling video, photos, interviews, and stories to advance organizing and advocacy objectives; design content using these materials.
  • Help conceive and collaborate on the production of short videos, audio segments, infographics, and other creative outputs, using tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, and Lumen5.
  • Manage a system for collection and sharing of audio, video, and photos of individual stories, quotes, testimonies, etc., from field work and partners and supporters; train and manage partners to regularly organize, caption, tag, and upload their content. Manage secure digital storage and organization of consent forms.
  • Develop, implement, and report on paid web/social media/print advertising campaigns.
  • Create and conduct trainings for grassroots partners, for example around social media usage, and general nonprofit marketing or communications best practices for organizing and advocacy.
  • Collaborate with grassroots partners to develop and execute digital storytelling campaigns that inform and inspire key audiences to take action.
  • Draft and disseminate periodic advocacy e-mails and updates to our list of supporters. Support updating and maintenance of coalition mailing list data and segmentation.

Website updates, maintenance, and analytics:

  • Work with the Namati team to create engaging web pages.
  • Systematically update websites  to ensure the content is updated and accurate, fix broken links, identify unanchored pages, improve linkages between site content, and otherwise ensure the smooth functioning of the MAJC website.
  • Manage Search Engine Optimization.
  • Provide Namati’s global communications team with updated copy to ensure description of US EJ efforts on the Namati website are accurate

The position may also hold broader communications responsibilities for the US EJ Program (depending on the individual’s background and experience):

  • Work with Namati team to set and monitor marketing and communications budgets.
  • Support cultivation of relationships with media outlets, including print media, television, radio, and podcasts. Develop strategies to drive traffic to specific press pieces. Track/maintain updated information on relationships with media outlets in our CRM database.
  • Work with the Namati team and contractors to draft and revise various types of communications products for publishing, including press releases, op-eds, blog posts, letters to the editor as well as announcements, updates, and Q&As about our work for use on the website, in the media, and for circulation within communities.

  • Track media mentions and placements and share this information with the Namati Global Communications team in a timely manner

Here are some things you might tackle in a typical week-

  • Prepare a social media toolkit for a campaign to push local elected officials to revise their infrastructure funding proposals to respond to community priorities.
  • Create accessible infographics for social media and flyering to raise Delaware impacted communities’ awareness of unsafe drinking water and ways to take action.

Company

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people.

For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction -- or worse, a threat -- but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights.

Namati is building a global movement of grassroots advocates who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These “barefoot lawyers” form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

In the past five years, Namati and our partners have worked with over 65,000 clients to take on some of the greatest challenges of our times: protecting community lands, enforcing environmental law, and securing basic rights to healthcare and citizenship.

We track data on every case and use that information to advocate for systemic changes, like better policies for land governance in Liberia, environmental regulation in India, and healthcare delivery in Mozambique.

And we're joining forces for change. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network -- over 1400+ groups and 5,000+ individuals from 150 countries learning from one another and bringing justice to communities in every part of the world.

Our work has gained recognition. Namati and the Global Legal Empowerment Network were recognized with the prestigious Skoll Award in 2016. Honoring CEO Vivek Maru as a fellow, Ashoka called ours the “best law-for-all model we’ve seen.” We’ve been published and featured in the Guardian, the New York Times, and Forbes. And we’ve had some hefty supporters, including an advisory board with leaders like Amartya Sen, Mo Ibrahim, Fazle Abed, and Madeleine Albright.

As we move into our next phase, we’re growing our global team of passionate, results-oriented, big-hearted advocates, united by a common mission and a strong culture:

  • Our mission is our North Star. It’s why we all wake up every day. We pour our hearts into this work. We’re innovators and changemakers. We are a young, energetic social enterprise and we know that our work is urgent. We believe in being nimble and doing what works. Our work makes real, tangible, measurable progress in people’s lives. We take abstract concepts – rule of law and human rights – and make them concrete, helping people find solutions that improve their lives every day. We walk our talk. Our movement is about legal empowerment and we bring this spirit of empowerment and collaboration to all our partnerships. We hold humility as a core value: we lead when necessary and follow when necessary. We are a truly global organization. Our offices are located in Delhi, Freetown, Maputo, Nairobi, Washington DC, and Yangon, and our staff come from all corners of the world. We are united by our common mission. We see our people as our most valuable resource. We bring on individuals of the highest caliber and character and we mentor, train, and support our staff.   We hold one another in the highest esteem. Our work relationships are built on deep abiding respect and love.
