Founded in 1987 and located in San Francisco’s Presidio, the Biodiversity Funders Group (BFG) is a professional association of grantmakers with a shared vision for a sustainable, just and healthy future for all life on Earth, advanced by a vibrant and effective philanthropic sector.

BFG supports member-driven programs and special initiatives that focus on climate change and energy, marine ecosystems, land and freshwater conservation, Mexico, Chile, the Andean-Amazon Basin, and global conservation. With an annual budget of $2.1M and a staff of eleven, BFG hosts convenings, briefings, webinars, and other activities throughout the year. POSITION OVERVIEW

The Membership Associate plays a critical role as a communicator, connector, and organizer for BFG’s members and program participants. This is an emerging staff role with much potential for growth in member development, nonprofit administration, and/or programs for funders. BFG’s small staff is highly creative and collegial. The Membership Associate reports to the Executive Director but will have many opportunities to work with everyone on BFG’s staff and many of the grantmakers who serve as volunteer leaders and committee members.

To support robust member engagement, the Membership Associate nurtures and maintains cordial working relationships with funders to nurture their connections to the organization. The Membership Associate designs and implements member communications, surveys, reports, and other resources to keep members involved with each other and with BFG. They will play a leadership role in developing and executing a comprehensive communications plan for members, prospects, and program activities.The Membership Associate ensures that BFG’s member contacts are up to date, develops systems and materials for new and prospective members, and participates in planning the annual members meeting and other learning opportunities for BFG members and program participants.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and carry out member cultivation and engagement strategies, with the support of the Executive Director and other BFG staff
  • Play a leadership role in coordinating BFG’s online communications, working with other staff to publicize relevant events and resources to the membership
  • Provide logistical and creative support to the Executive Director and the planning committee for BFG’s multi-day Annual Members Meeting, held in different locations in North America
  • Draft and update or edit reports, surveys, grantmaking analyses, and other external and internal materials on occasion
  • Respond in a timely and collegial manner to requests for information and assistance from members and program participants
  • Uphold BFG’s mission, vision, and values, including participating in trainings and discussions of power and equity in society, in conservation philanthropy, and within BFG

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three years’ experience conducting outreach and communicating directly with donors, clients, members and/or constituents in a nonprofit setting (experience working for networks, associations, or coalitions a plus)
  • Strong project management skills, with a background in anticipating, prioritizing, and managing multiple projects at one time
  • Exceptional time management skills, with proven ability to work independently and with different actors and in different teams with poise and grace
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (expertise in copy editing and/or proofreading a plus)
  • Familiarity with hosting meetings on Zoom, Teams, or related video conference programs
  • Experience working with Salesforce or similar CRM databases, Canva or similar digital design tools, and email distribution platforms such as Mailchimp
  • A broad understanding of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors
  • Familiarity with and interest in environmental issues
  • Ability to travel as many as four or five times a year, for a few days at a time

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional background in environmental, conservation, and/or climate change and energy work
  • Administrative or program experience in grantmaking foundations or philanthropy-serving organizations
  • Background in donor cultivation and strategic communications for membership institutions
  • Background in successfully coordinating teams, committees, or volunteer activities
  • Experience implementing virtual meetings and webinars for large groups, using event-hosting platforms like RegFox or Bizzabo
  • Experience in managing or supporting the logistics of in-person meetings, conferences or other large (60-150 people) multi-day events

  • Ability to lift and carry up to approximately 30 pounds

COMPENSATION: This is a full-time position. BFG offers an excellent benefits package. Starting annual salary is $75,000. BFG is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

LOCATION: This is a remote position. BFG has a distributed staff; candidates based in the Pacific Time Zone are preferred. Candidates must be able to access an international airport easily for occasional travel.
