The Grant Accountant provides financial and accounting services to the related programs and grants of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington.  The position involves handling confidential information which requires discretion, diplomacy, and high level of professionalism. The position reports to the Senior Accountant and includes working relationships with the CFO, Directors, Program Directors, administrative finance office staff, the Diocesan accounting office staff, grantors and community at large. The Grant Accountant participates in program and grant budget monitoring, preparing journal entries for monthly financial statements, preparing monthly grant invoices, monitoring policy and program compliance, as well as grant administration.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Timely prepare monthly journal entries for internal program and grant financial statements.
  • Timely prepare grant billing invoices or financial reports for multiple State and Locally funded grant programs. Review account balances and support program directors with grant monitoring and compliance.
  • Timely prepare Migration and Refugee Services Federal and State grant billings and submissions and monitor compliance.
  • Support the year end accounting close process and assist with the publishing of internal and external financial statements for the Board of Directors and general public. Provide audit support during annual audit.
  • Prepare trial balance account reviews, account reconciliations, and report on findings to the Controller. Investigate and propose adjustments to budgets and billings.
  • Review program budgets and report on spending trends, opportunities for cost savings, strategic sourcing and related financial management improvements.
  • Work closely with Program Directors on grant and donor restricted fund management.
  • Design, propose and implement internal control improvements at the program level. Conduct trainings in the field to increase compliance and program knowledge of financial administration.
  • Adhere to all weekly and monthly accounting deadlines
  • Assist with staff meetings, workshops and training sessions
  • Other duties as assigned

 
Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required
  • Minimum of zero to two years’ relevant experience in accounting, contract management and grants processing (billing and reporting)
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel is required, experience with pivot tables, macros, and VBA required. Strong skill in MS Word, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • Knowledge of US GAAP accounting rules a plus
  • Experience with budgets and ability to assist with budget management and manage credit cards, purchase orders and other expenses that impact the budget.
  • Prefer candidates have prior work experience or internship experience in non-profit environment or work experience with federal and state contracting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent team player with ability to interact tactfully and effectively with clients and staff in a multi-cultural environment
  • Must be a team player and able to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment required.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, regional, and local agencies, churches, community leaders and the general public
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
