About the Position

Namati helps people understand, use, and shape the law to support and defend their communities. Since 2011, Namati has worked to build a movement of grassroots advocates worldwide, growing from a small group of big-hearted justice seekers to a global staff of more than 150 people across 6 countries.  Our people - our staff, community partners, and the justice seekers we work with on the ground every day - are everything to us.

We’re looking for an Operations Associate to manage our DC office space and ensure that new team members have access to all the systems and equipment they need. The perfect candidate is someone eager to jump in, learn how things are done, and proactively look for ways to improve the organization. While this is largely a back-of-house role, you’d also be charged with responding to some public inquiries and helping the occasional visitor to our office. This role reports to the Operations Officer.

This is a very task- and execution-oriented role. You’ll manage office supplies, give tours of the office to new staff, troubleshoot tech issues, help run office events, order business cards, maintain the IT inventory sheet, and generally provide ad-hoc support to the global cross-cutting teams in whatever ways you can!

We’re looking for someone who takes real pride in facilitating the work of their colleagues, and who is glad to be the go-to person in the office when someone needs help. It’s not always a glamorous job, but there’s lots to learn about systems and office management for an aspiring operations professional. While initially this role will just support these office functions, the ideal candidate will grow with the role, take on additional responsibilities, and be able to operate more autonomously over time to truly “own” the effective function of our DC office.

Roles & Responsibilities -

Systems + Technology

  • Manage DC office tech inventory and provide on-the-ground IT support
  • Manage equipment and software licenses, ensuring Namatians have the hardware and software they need
  • Support Zoom calls as technical support

DC Office Management

  • General DC office upkeep (check mail, water plants, manage supply inventory, etc)
  • Liaise with building management on maintenance & repairs
  • Orient new staff/visitors to the DC office
  • Support planning and preparation for office events

Executive Operational Support (as needed)

  • Support the COO + CEO with travel logistics and preparation
  • Provide in-person technology and equipment support
  • Provide general administrative support
  • Serve as the back-up for the Senior Executive Associate

Other Operations Support

  • Manage general inbox, route messages appropriately
  • Design and order business cards for the global team
  • Provide other operational and administrative support to Namati's cross-cutting team as needed

Here’s what you might have tackled last week -

  • Set up a computer for a new staff member with all the software needed, packaged it, and shipped it out to them
  • Coordinated with the Network team to answer a question from someone writing to the general inbox
  • Supported a virtual team wide meeting by acting as the Zoom moderator and troubleshooting any technical issues
  • Booked a hotel in DC for a colleague from Kenya who is visiting the DC office
  • Booked a venue and coordinated catering for an upcoming DC Office retreat

Company

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people.

For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction -- or worse, a threat -- but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights.

Namati is building a global movement of grassroots advocates who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These “barefoot lawyers” form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

In the past five years, Namati and our partners have worked with over 65,000 clients to take on some of the greatest challenges of our times: protecting community lands, enforcing environmental law, and securing basic rights to healthcare and citizenship.

We track data on every case and use that information to advocate for systemic changes, like better policies for land governance in Liberia, environmental regulation in India, and healthcare delivery in Mozambique.

And we're joining forces for change. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network -- over 1400+ groups and 5,000+ individuals from 150 countries learning from one another and bringing justice to communities in every part of the world.

Our work has gained recognition. Namati and the Global Legal Empowerment Network were recognized with the prestigious Skoll Award in 2016. Honoring CEO Vivek Maru as a fellow, Ashoka called ours the “best law-for-all model we’ve seen.” We’ve been published and featured in the Guardian, the New York Times, and Forbes. And we’ve had some hefty supporters, including an advisory board with leaders like Amartya Sen, Mo Ibrahim, Fazle Abed, and Madeleine Albright.

As we move into our next phase, we’re growing our global team of passionate, results-oriented, big-hearted advocates, united by a common mission and a strong culture:

  • Our mission is our North Star. It’s why we all wake up every day. We pour our hearts into this work. We’re innovators and changemakers. We are a young, energetic social enterprise and we know that our work is urgent. We believe in being nimble and doing what works. Our work makes real, tangible, measurable progress in people’s lives. We take abstract concepts – rule of law and human rights – and make them concrete, helping people find solutions that improve their lives every day. We walk our talk. Our movement is about legal empowerment and we bring this spirit of empowerment and collaboration to all our partnerships. We hold humility as a core value: we lead when necessary and follow when necessary. We are a truly global organization. Our offices are located in Delhi, Freetown, Maputo, Nairobi, Washington DC, and Yangon, and our staff come from all corners of the world. We are united by our common mission. We see our people as our most valuable resource. We bring on individuals of the highest caliber and character and we mentor, train, and support our staff.   We hold one another in the highest esteem. Our work relationships are built on deep abiding respect and love.
