SOMOS FRC Coordinator (Family Advocate) - Temporary Position

The SOMOS FRC Coordinator (Family Advocate) is the first point of contact between SOMOS Mayfair and families across the communities of East San Jose. FRC Family Advocates work together as a team to strengthen existing relationships among members of our community, facilitate new relationships, and cultivate community-building and community-power.

SOMOS Family Advocate are responsible for family engagement in the form of outreach, hosting, and convening parents and children as active participants in the services, programs, and campaigns of SOMOS Mayfair. The FRC Family Advocates provides comprehensive assessments to connect families to SOMOS Mayfair programs and resources, solidarity support to families in understanding typical development of children, and "warm hand-off" referrals to secure services and resources with our partner organizations that support family and community well-being. The FRC Family Advocate will also be responsible for planning and convening workshops, coordinating staff and parent leaders, and providing opportunities for leadership and professional development to community members. Finally, the FRC Family Advocates enter and manage all data and evaluation tools for the families they support and the workshop series or program components they coordinate.

The SOMOS FRC Family Advocate will work with the Cesar Chavez FRC Manager and Painter Site Supervisor to meet objectives and increase capacity in delivering our FIRST 5 scope of work at perspective FRCs while continuing to align our alternative systems work with our community organizing and leadership development strategies. FRC Family Advocate works with community organizing coordinators and leadership development coordinators to bring popular education tools and community organizing strategies to the families of Mayfair. The SOMOS FRC Family Advocate will also have opportunities to support the FRC Manager in maintaining and cultivating new community partnerships that support the SOMOS Mayfair and the Si Se Puede Collective “No Wrong Door” model in East Side San Jose.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications and Qualities

  • Deep passion and commitment to advancing racial, economic and social justice in immigrant, working class and multi-generational communities
  • Experience with design and implementation of programming through equity and community-based frameworks.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • 2-year experience in the family strengthening/social work field /nonprofit field.
  • Experience in delivering or participating in FIRST 5 or other early learning programs, services, and curriculums.
  • Experience in administering or receiving early learning assessments.
  • Experience in public presentations and group facilitation.
  • Experience in community outreach and engagement.

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a broad audience.
  • Knowledge of community resources, agencies, and services.
  • Technology proficiency including virtual platforms, MS Word, Excel, etc.
  • Bilingual/biliterate Spanish English required
  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required
  • Fingerprint and background check may be required

 Duties and Responsibilities (approximate % of time)

Direct Service (25%)

  • Coordinate and conduct intakes and assessments to ensure families have access to their rights and the full range of services and opportunities available to them within SOMOS Mayfair, the Si Se Puede Collective, and beyond.
  • Coordinate and conduct Ages and Stages (ASQ) questionnaires with children ages 0-5, communicate with partners and follow up as needed.
  • Coordinate and conduct “warm hand-off" referrals and follow-up with partners in a timely manner to ensure best possible outcomes for children and families.
  • Welcome and support with walk-in families.
  • Complete and maintain documentation and/or records of intakes, ASQs, and services rendered or referred.
  • Support the Painter Co-Op family volunteers 

Outreach (20%

  • Coordinate with program assistants and community leaders to design outreach and engagement opportunities that are embedded in the community culture and responsive to community needs.
  • Work closely with partners in the Alum Rock School District, the Si Se Puede Collective Hub, the County of Santa Clara, First5 and others to publish and disseminate the services and programs available to families at the FRCs, especially the Preschool Co-op.
  • Participate in community events and activities to promote SOMOS programs/ services including partner events and recruit participation.
  • Register families for programs/ resources that fit their needs or provide a referral for other internal programs when needed.
  • Conduct follow-up phone calls, send texts and emails to participants.
  • Enroll children and families into the Painter Co-Op Preschool 

Strategy and Program Development (15%)

  • Listen to community leaders and partners to identify gaps and create a feedback loop to fill said gaps.
  • Collect and submit data into evaluation tools and platforms in a timely manner.
  • Support in strategy development to create accessible services for the community within the community.
  • Support in the development of networked “warm hand off” referral systems with County of Santa Clara, ARUSD, and the SSPC Hubs.
  • Support in relationship-building with partners providing programs and services at the FRC Coordinate FRC volunteer program
  • Duties as assigned pertaining directly to programmatic or SOW changes.

External Relationships (10%)

  • Co-design and coordinate listening sessions with the community.
  • Establish professional working relationships with community groups, organizations, local schools and school districts and agencies (etc.) to ensure and promote the long-term organizational mission and goals.
  • Represent SOMOS Mayfair at meetings with stakeholders, partners, and allies, as directed.

Administrative (10%)

  • Execution of work plan to ensure clear understanding of expectations, deliverables, and impact.
  • Follow programmatic and agency protocols and procedures.
  • Supervision of Program Assistants, Volunteers, and other community workers.
  • Attend team/organization meetings.

Impact Evaluation (10%)

  • Ensure accurate data entry and participation in evaluation/reporting training, meetings, and strategies.
  • Participate in SOMOS Mayfair decision-making spaces to inform future and ongoing strategies and programming.
  • Support and participate in critical community and stakeholder analysis.

Professional Development (10%)

  • Participate in all training related to the performance of the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Coach and train colleagues, as needed, in programmatic functions.
  • Communicate with the supervisor about personal and professional goals, challenges, conflicts, and wins.
  • Participate in regular internal political education.
