Position Title: Digital Manager, The Forge

Position Location: CPD/A has offices in NYC and DC, but for this role, we will consider candidates who live outside our office areas but within the US.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a Digital Manager of The Forge. This is a full-time, exempt position.

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with nearly 50 affiliates in over 30 states and Puerto Rico to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We are seeking a Digital Manager to oversee website design, digital list building, communications, and grassroots fundraising for The Forge: Organizing Strategy and Practice — an online journal and learning community by and for progressive organizers. The Digital Manager will work with a team of core volunteers and contractors to oversee the redesign of the website, develop and lead digital communications strategy, grow the audience for The Forge, and engage grassroots donors.  This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious digital organizer to play a key role in developing a growing publication and learning community — which sits at the intersection of organizing and publishing — at a critical moment for our movement.

We estimate that candidates will have about 6 years of experience in digital organizing, communications, or grassroots fundraising for a progressive media organization or grassroots organizing group, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.

The Digital Manager will report to the Editor.

Primary Responsibilities

The Digital Manager will:

  • Collaborate with the Editor to develop online engagement strategy for The Forge.
  • Plan and execute social media and email campaigns, including promoting new content, developing paid ads, and engaging movement leaders and contributors to support communication and audience-building goals.
  • Execute digital grassroots fundraising strategies to develop a sustainable source of grassroots revenue.
  • Plan and execute audience development and list-building strategies to grow The Forge’s audience.
  • Oversee and grow a team of volunteers and develop a robust infrastructure for volunteers to meaningfully contribute to the digital and communications work of the publication.
  • Manage the website, including uploading and formatting content, selecting artwork to accompany pieces, and work with the Editor to plan and oversee a website redesign.
  • Develop effective organizational systems, execute contracts, and submit finance reports.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience in digital organizing, communications, or grassroots fundraising, preferably for a progressive media organization or grassroots organizing group;
  • Experience designing and running communications and social media campaigns;
  • Ability to design and run grassroots fundraising campaigns to generate meaningful, sustainable revenue;
  • Experience developing and growing volunteer teams strongly preferred;
  • The ability to build and maintain positive relationships across lines of difference;
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple projects and deadlines;
  • Creativity to innovate and experiment as we build The Forge;
  • A strong analysis of the key debates and questions facing the progressive movement as a whole and a vision for how we can win;
  • A commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of the challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.

Salary and Benefits:

This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild. Specific employment terms are subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Salary under the CBA will be determined according to a salary scale that takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $65,000-$75,000 and category 2. The CBA is available here.

We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days your first year, 10 sick days per year, 13 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.

CPD/A is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer and actively recruits people of color, womxn, individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBTIQAA+ community.
