Job Title: After School Program Support Specialist (teaching and driving)

Program: Education and Youth

Schedule: 16 hours a week, including the hours of approx. 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday; some weekends

Supervisor: Senior Youth Coordinator

Tentative Start Date: December 5, 2022

Bright Futures Afterschool program serves approximately 145, K-8th grade students enrolled in our partnered DeKalb County School sites. Program activities we focus on include: homework support, interactive CORE subject and enrichment activities, and literacy tutoring. The After School Program Support Specialist will support all after sites as needed throughout the week of programming. Support will include driving 1 agency vehicle to transport program participants as requested and serving as an substitute teacher during program hours as needed. This position is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operations of all participants including students, employed staff, AmeriCorps members, interns, and volunteers, and daily site running throughout the academic school year and separate summer camp. They will also be responsible for instructing one class and assisting in assessing students, documenting progress, and updating required program records. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be available during afterschool and evening hours, approximately 3PM-8PM each day.

Driver responsibilities

  • Transport students for afterschool and summer program activities using agency vehicles as needed Monday-Friday.
  • Assists with transportation of students during occasional field trips and summer camp activities during weekends and summer months.
  • Maintains up to date vehicle use logs and communicate any maintenance needs.
  • Ensures routine cleaning of agency vehicles and are fully stocked with appropriate PPE items for staff and clients.

Teacher responsibilities

  • Manage one assigned classroom of elementary or middle school aged students as well as AmeriCorps members, volunteers, and tutors.
  • Support the daily operation of assigned site including supporting fellow teachers, ensuring collection of all daily documentation, handling minor issues, etc.
  • Implement grant required youth literacy (ESOL), youth development, and academic curriculum in assigned classroom in collaboration with site AmeriCorps members
  • Administer standards of positive behavior support and discipline for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and address student issues and conflicts appropriately as needed.
  • Ensure maintenance, security, and accountability of all Youth Program supplies, equipment, and property at the school site
  • Submit daily and weekly site reports to Lead Teacher and Senior Youth Coordinator.
  • Attend trainings, events and meetings for the New American Pathways Youth Program, occasionally outside of regular hours if mandatory.
  • Report any suspected cases of child abuse and child neglect and refer children to Lead Teacher and Senior Youth Coordinator.
  • Follow the expectations outlined in the New American Pathways employee and afterschool program handbook in order to create a safe, welcoming environment where all clients feel safe and important
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Clean driving record with more than 3 years’ experience driving in the U.S.
  • Must have valid Georgia driver’s license with up to date insurance coverage
  • Comfortable with driving 15 passenger bus. No special license required
  • At least 1 year of teaching (formal or informal) youth under the age of 18
  • Strong organizational skills with a proven ability to effectively multitask
  • Good time management and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission to help refugees and Georgia thrive
  • Submit to a criminal background check
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals and be sensitive to all cultures, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds
  • Flexible and able to work with others in a fast-paced environment and under a variety of circumstances
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of refugee youth
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software

This is a part-time position with a starting salary of $17 hourly and contingent on funding.
