Senior Associate, Legal Affairs (Hybrid)
This position reports to the Director, Legal Affairs and Senior Counsel, will be based in Pew's Washington, DC office, and is eligible for 60% telework.
Position Overview:
The Senior Associate and Associate Counsel provides risk-informed counsel on matters regarding content, branding, and media, and supports the management and protection of Pew's intellectual property assets and related agreements, policies, and processes. This position provides legal support to Pew's communications department and advises the organization on legal issues affecting traditional and digital media, including social media. Day-to-day duties include drafting and reviewing a wide variety of contracts, including vendor contracts and media, licensing, sponsorship, and other intellectual property-related agreements; advising internal clients on copyright and trademark compliance and issues related to open access, open science, and open data; conducting pre-publication reviews; intellectual property portfolio management and enforcement; and conducting relevant legal research and analysis on the requirements that apply to Pew's expanding activities; and supporting senior attorneys in advising Pew's program and operations teams, as needed.
The ideal candidate must have experience with media law, intellectual property law, and contracting, and should be adept at working both independently and with cross-organizational teams. An understanding of the laws applicable to tax-exempt public charities, data privacy laws, and/or antitrust is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Communications and Intellectual Property
- Act as a liaison for Legal Affairs with Pew's communications department
- Advise staff on media (including social media), branding, contracting, and intellectual property issues, under the supervision of senior attorneys.
- Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of agreements in connection with Pew's work, including but not limited to, service agreements, transfer agreements, vendor agreements, licensing and use agreements, and other contracts or agreements.
- Review and assess communications and publications for compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including those on defamation, electioneering, antitrust, and grassroots lobbying.
- Participate in the development of institutional policies regarding the management and protection of intellectual property.
- Under the supervision of senior attorneys, manage Pew's trademark and copyright processes and oversee all applicable legal filings.
- Under the supervision of senior attorneys, advise on intellectual property-related prosecution, enforcement, and litigation efforts, working with outside counsel as necessary.
- Provide risk-based counsel on complex and emerging legal issues regarding media, content, branding, and intellectual property issues, including open access issues.
Institutional/Departmental
- Perform legal research and work with senior attorneys in the Legal Affairs department to respond to legal requests from various internal clients.
- Identify and assess legal, business, and reputational risks to the organization.
- Stay up-to-date on relevant developments in the areas of media, branding, digital trends, defamation/libel, privacy, antitrust, intellectual property, and contract law, among others.
- Contribute to and participate in organizational and departmental initiatives as requested.

Requirements:
- J.D. required.
- A minimum of four years of experience, of which two years must be relevant legal experience
- Licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia or eligible for such admission promptly upon hiring.
- Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate a broad range of agreements required.
- Experience advising on media (including social media) and intellectual property issues required.
- Experience advising on antitrust and data privacy issues preferred.
- Tax-exempt organization experience at a law firm or in-house legal department preferred.
