Atlanta Legal Aid Society (Legal Aid) works to remove barriers to justice so that everyone can receive quality legal care, regardless of income. Through our 80 attorneys on staff, our self-help tools, and our pro bono program, we help our clients deal with some of life’s most basic needs. For nearly 100 years, we have been helping our clients to secure safe homes, have enough food to eat, get a decent education, be protected against fraud, and get legal protection against domestic violence.

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks two full-time Attorneys, one to work in their Downtown Atlanta office in the (1) Kinship Care Project, as well as one to work in their DeKalb County (Decatur, GA) office in the (2) Home Defense Program. Attorneys in our branches represent low-income persons in a wide variety of civil law problems, using a variety of methods, including full representation, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, and mediation. A significant part of this position entails litigation. Our attorneys handle a mixed caseload and provide community education to low-income persons and are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations.

Qualifications: A Georgia bar license or eligibility to sit for the next exam is required. Qualified candidates also must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. The ability to balance compassion and pragmatism in representing low-income clients is necessary. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of poverty law, and previous work with low-income people, are strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish is highly valued in applicant selection. Each attorney position's qualifications vary by department due to the specific nature of the work.

Terms: Salary is commensurate with experience. The salary for a full-time licensed staff attorney varies depending on number of years of experience. The program has a telecommuting policy that allows for full-time employees to work up to TWO days from home after a probationary period and manager approval. The program also provides generous fringe benefits for full-time employees, including 12 paid holidays, paid time off with an accrual of 2.5 days per month (30 days per year); parental leave (up to 3 months for child bearing parent; up to 6 weeks for fathers and adopting parents); heavily subsidized health insurance, life insurance ($15,000 plus twice annual salary), and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); and a voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match.

To apply: A complete application packet must include a letter of application, résumé, recent writing sample demonstrating your ability to research and analyze a legal issue, the names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references, and an official law school transcript. (A copy is acceptable, pending your order of an official transcript). Please submit your application as one (1) PDF using our online application system at the following link:
