Job Details

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network seeks an experienced grant writer to lead foundation fundraising and support our membership program.

The Grants Manager will build upon an already robust fundraising program and raise our profile among the funder community in the environmental sector. With tens of thousands of dedicated activists and donors in Maryland, DC, and Virginia, CCAN has inspired countless people to get involved in our campaigns to protect our climate. We are searching for someone with the passion and skills to effectively tell our story and deepen our relationships with the foundations that support our work. As the successful candidate will also be an excellent writer, we envision this new position leading our organization’s fundraising content and email communications.

About Us

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the first group in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. dedicated exclusively to building a powerful grassroots movement to fight climate change. We envision an equitable energy future: phasing out fossil fuels, prioritizing efficiency, and sustaining every aspect of our lives with truly clean power sources — solar, wind, and geothermal.

We are committed to taking on big fights and pushing the envelope of what’s “politically possible,” using every tool inside and outside the box – from organizing and direct action to lobbying and the law. We apply that same ethic to our fundraising efforts.

About You

The Grants Manager will have the skills, passion, and commitment to translate CCAN’s vital work into winning fundraising communications, grant reports, and proposals. We are looking for someone who knows that details matter, has an inner drive to hit goals and deadlines, loves writing, and is excited to own every aspect of our foundation grants program to ensure our team has the continued resources to win.

What You Will Do

  • Foundation fundraising: The Grant Manager’s top priority is sustaining and growing our foundation grants program and raising our profile among the funder community in our sector. This involves working with relevant staff to write and submit all the reports and proposals for CCAN’s 30+ grants. The manager will maintain relations with current funders of CCAN and our sister advocacy organization CCAN Action Fund and bring in additional foundations.
  • Manage grant cycle: track deadlines and reporting requirements, prepare CCAN’s Executive Director and state directors for funder check-in meetings and follow up on donor requests.
  • Fundraising communications:  As the organization’s fundraising content manager, you will support content needs and online communications with our membership program, the network of activist donors who drive CCAN’s grassroots power.

Qualifications

  • At least two years grant writing experience.
  • Experience with persuasive writing or writing for advocacy.
  • Experience with donor databases or CRM management (CCAN uses Kindful and Engaging Networks).
  • Alignment with CCAN’s mission and values.
  • Proven success managing multiple ongoing projects with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willing to travel throughout Maryland, DC, and Virginia to attend meetings with potential broader domestic travel for foundation convenings.

The Details

The Grants Manager works in our Takoma Park, MD office, blocks from DC’s Red Line. CCAN staff work at least two days weekly in the office and three days from home.

Salary is $55,000-$65,000 per year, commensurate with experience. We provide a generous benefits package, including health care, dental and vision coverage, and four weeks of paid vacation.

How to Apply

Please fill out the Google form application to answer short questions and submit a resume. A writing sample is required for this position. We will be accepting applications on a rolling basis and are working to fill the position as soon as possible.

The interview process will consist of a phone interview, a panel interview over Zoom or in person, and a skills test.

CCAN is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce. We value bringing diverse backgrounds and perspectives to staff to make us smarter and more effective at what we do. Ultimately, we want our staff and supporters to reflect the communities we organize. We encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to apply for this position.
