Job Details

Starting Date: January 2023

Justice Catalyst Law (“JCL”) is looking for a Program Assistant to join our team! The Program Assistant will have a diverse and dynamic role across the organization, working on various administrative, operations, and programmatic needs that are critical to JCL’s mission. The Program Assistant will work under the direction of the Operations Director, but will work closely with other members of the JCL team, supporting various projects. The Program Assistant will also have the opportunity to help build new systems and processes that improve efficiency and better enable JCL to meet its goals.

OUR ORGANIZATION

A nonprofit organization founded in 2018, Justice Catalyst Law develops cutting-edge, interdisciplinary impact cases and legal strategies that advance economic and social justice. Our mission is to expand the legal system’s potential to provide meaningful accountability for the most powerful, and to bring justice and sustainable change to the communities that are most often left behind by our economic and legal systems, with attention to racial and other longstanding inequities. We often work in collaboration with nonprofits, advocates, and law firms to develop, investigate, and litigate bold cases with broad, practical, on-the-ground impact. We specialize in impact litigation challenging corporate power and abuses by private actors, and applying multi-disciplinary, innovative approaches to long-standing social problems.

Our cross-cutting docket includes, for example, an antitrust case against the bail industry alleging a decade-long year agreement to inflate premiums paid for commercial bail, as well as a ground-breaking case challenging discrimination against people with opioid use disorder.

Though we are a new organization, our impact is growing. Our cases have resulted in, for example, reforms to discriminatory lending policies that harmed DACA recipients and a $20 million dollar settlement, and in another case, a preliminary injunction preventing reliance on unreliable drug test to punish incarcerated individuals. Our litigation is often very ambitious – as one industry commentator said, “If the court rules in favor of the plaintiffs {in Moerhl v. National Association of Realtors}. . . the entire infrastructure of residential real estate in the United States has to be remade.”

For more information about our cases, visit the cases page on this site.

We are also a small and highly collaborative team of people who work hard and laugh hard, and welcome new perspectives and ideas. We enjoy a lively start-up culture that encourages spirited debate based on throwing ourselves deeply into the details of a particular problem, and pushing to find a path to a practical and permanent solution. Our team stands together in our shared commitment to using our talents and energy to making a more just and equitable world right now. We have an experimental mindset and encourage unconventional thinking and risk-taking. We value employee relationships, growth, and well-being, and strive to create an equitable, inclusive organization.

Justice Catalyst Law works closely with Justice Catalyst, a nonprofit organization that supports innovative legal work and administers a fellowship program for new attorneys in public interest fields at nonprofits, government agencies, and other offices.

Justice Catalyst Law is tax-exempt as a 501(c)(3) human and civil rights organization.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We believe that a variety of perspectives and backgrounds enriches and maximizes our work. We aim to assemble an applicant pool that is reflective of the world in which we live — one that is diverse in race, color, age, religion, ancestry, national origin, ethnicity, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic background, professional background, mental and physical abilities, and other traits that make us who we are.

We are also an organization made up of lawyers and non-lawyers, and we work alongside, and have great respect for advocates, organizers, and clients from every walk of life. The right person for this role will be committed to listening to and learning from people with different life experiences and expertise.

JCL is an equal opportunity employer. All employment decisions are made without regard to any status or activity protected by applicable federal, state, or local law. We strongly encourage anyone who is interested in this opportunity to apply.

To Apply

Please submit a resume and brief personal statement using the form on our website: https://justicecatalyst.org/join-our-team/program-assistant/

Your personal statement should address:

  1. A description of the most challenging assignment or ongoing responsibility that you have had in the workplace and how you handled it; and
  2. How you might bring diversity, of any kind, to the organization (please note you are encouraged to answer this question, but it is optional)

Company

Founded in 2016, Justice Catalyst Law is new, lean, and agile. We take on social justice issues that fall between the cracks of traditional advocacy models, connect lawyers and advocates with diverse specialties, and apply a cross-disciplinary, problem-centric approach to the law. For example, in Crain v. Accredited Surety & Bond, we worked with a private firm and other nonprofit organizations to bring an antitrust lawsuit against California bail bonds companies and insurers for fixing bond prices. See the L.A. Times article on this case

Our other matters involve areas as diverse as worker’s rights, consumer debt, civil rights, foreclosure protection, consumer protection, and prisoners’ rights. This broad range reflects our approach: instead of focusing on enforcing a narrow area of law, we first try to understand the injustice, then build a team that can draw on all of the areas of law necessary to address it, with an eye toward activating underused laws and legal theories.
