Department: Education and Youth

Schedule: Elementary Program sites: (Decatur)approx. 2:30p.m-5:30p.m and on day schedule (Clarkston): approx. 2:00p.m-5:30p.m and on day scheduled

Middle School Program sites schedule:(Stone Mtn): approx.4:00p.m-6:25p.m, on day scheduled

Supervisor: Snr. Youth Coordinator/Lead Teachers at assigned program site

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Bright Futures Afterschool program serves approximately 135, K-8th grade students enrolled in our partnered DeKalb County Elementary and Middle School program sites. Program activities we focus include: homework support, interactive CORE subject and enrichment activities, and literacy tutoring. The Afterschool Substitute Teacher is responsible for leading in an afterschool class of refugee youth in the absence of the Class Instructor or Lead Teacher. Duties include tutoring students, conducting extracurricular activities, and leading interactive lessons with the support of AmeriCorps members and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise students, volunteers, and tutors in assigned classroom.
  • Support other site staff in leading the program site during afterschool hours.
  • Carry out supplemental activities, such as educational games, reading groups, arts & crafts
  • Practice appropriate behavior management techniques and be aware of your surroundings to ensure safety of the students at all times.
  • Tutor refugee youth (grades K-8) in all academic subjects, specifically focusing on literacy skills, self-sufficiency, creativity, and academic progress
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the classroom and all other spaces utilized
  • Provide Youth Coordinator and Lead Teacher with any updates on students regarding academic progress, behavior, and overall well-being
  • Maintain punctuality and good attendance
  • Understand your role as a mandatory reporter of suspected child abuse and follow New AP mandatory reporting protocol
  • Follow the expectations outlined in the New American Pathways culture, ensuring to create a safe, welcoming environment where all students feel safe and important

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Sensitivity to people of all cultures, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds
  • Submit to a criminal background check before working in the program
  • Dependable and committed to the safety, health, and well-being of refugee youth
  • At least 18 years of age and able to be physically active and mentally prepared to work with refugee youth of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience working with youth in grades K-8 in an educational setting, preferably with refugee and/or immigrant youth
  • Teaching background (degree, certification, etc.) preferred, but not required
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and serving refugees.

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time contractual position with a salary of $18-$20 based on teaching experience. Hours are not guaranteed and may not occur on a regular basis.
