About the Opportunity

At the core of B Lab’s work are social and environmental business performance standards that  are the basis for B Corp Certification requirements, B Lab’s impact management tools the B Impact Assessment and SDG Action Manager, and other aspects of B Lab’s work - the content of which is developed and managed by B Lab’s Standards team.  

The Director, Corporate Governance & Sustainability Standards will play a unique leadership role on the Standards team in order to maintain and build the influence, relevance, credibility, and impact of B Lab’s work. 

More specifically, this role will oversee the ‘governance’ topics in the B Corp standards - designed to identify best in class practices to incorporate impact and stakeholders into how a company is governed. Within this work, the role will also be responsible for determining how these standards interact with existing and emerging regulations regarding corporate disclosures and sustainability reporting (such as the ISSB, CSRD in the EU, and SEC), as well as helping collate and develop B Lab’s own perspectives as inputs into these efforts to ensure they are driving towards B Lab’s vision of an equitable, inclusive, and regenerative economy. 

The Director will also be responsible for two direct reports and their workstreams, including the development of new standards specifically for the Finance sector and the ongoing application of the “Baseline Requirements for Multinationals,” a set of specific requirements, with a governance focus, for large companies pursuing B Corp Certification.

Core Responsibilities 

Developing & Overseeing B Corp Governance Standards (33%)

  • Overseeing the governance focused components of B Lab’s standards, including the ongoing development of new draft performance standards related to Corporate Purpose and Stakeholder Governance 
  • Supporting the interpretation of the B Corp governance standards standards as they currently exist as well as in future developments, including providing clarity through written materials and guidance to verifiers and others on how to understand and approach them
  • Maintaining knowledge about existing and emerging best practices and identifying ongoing opportunities to improve the standards over time 
  • Engaging and managing relationships with relevant stakeholders to gather ongoing input to the standards
  • Developing concrete suggestions for improvement based on existing knowledge, research, and stakeholder engagement, 
  • Considering the concepts of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the content of the standards and development processes

Policy Engagement Related to Governance Standards (33%)

  • Researching and analyzing existing and emerging policy initiatives related to B Lab’s standards, particularly as it relates to sustainability reporting and/or disclosures, including those in development by the ISSB, EU, and SEC (US), to inform developments of B Corp standards
  • Representing B Lab’s standards and coordinating with other stakeholders, internal and external, to develop B Lab’s perspectives and contributions to regulatory developments related to the B Corp standards, including submissions to relevant public comment periods and other thought leadership
  • Supporting B Lab’s public policy efforts related to stakeholder governance and best practices it’s adoption and implementation in coordination with B Lab’s global partners and other partners
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with other standards organizations, stakeholders, and partners to coordinate efforts, develop mutually beneficial relationships, and ensure appropriate inputs into the teams work

Team Leadership & Support (33%)

  • Organizing and coordinating work across projects to ensure appropriate prioritization and efficient and effective delivery 
  • Supporting and helping co-lead the workstreams of two direct reports related to governance standards, including the development of new finance standards and the application of B Corp standards for large multinationals
  • Directly managing and supporting the work, engagement, and professional development of two team members
  • Supporting and leading team operations and strategy, with the Head of Standards and Insights, and other Director and Associate Director of Standards, including departmental budget and resource allocations, hiring processes and contractors, identification of team needs for additional resources and support, team engagement and productivity, justice, equity, diversity, inclusion on the team. and new projects 
  • Providing general input and support on the development of B Lab’s standards content, including B Corp Certification requirements, the B Impact Assessment, SDG Action Manager, and Controversial Issues position statements

About you

  • 7-9 years of experience in roles directly related to corporate governance and/or corporate sustainability and reporting
  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills, particularly involving challenging and technical topics
  • Experience in project and relationship management, with ability to tackle and support multiple complex projects, with a diverse set of stakeholders and significant change management, to deliver them in a timely and effective manner
  • Ability to manage and support others, including ongoing coaching and professional development
  • Familiarity with and a passion for addressing the intersections of business and social and environmental issues
  • Comfort in an entrepreneurial environment
  • An expertise or willingness to work in ways that demonstrate a commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion

For success in this role, the ideal candidate will have familiarity / expertise in:

  • Existing and emerging sustainability disclosure standards, processes (such as materiality assessments), and regulations 
  • Sustainable finance
  • Working with regulators, standards setters, and other relevant partners related to corporate governance, reporting, and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on the European Union
  • Working globally, virtually, and across cultures to support B Lab’s work around the world

Compensation Details

B Lab has a competitive compensation plan that includes:

  • An annual salary of £75,700
  • In your first year, you’ll start with 20 vacation days in addition to national & bank holidays
  • Additional time off during org- wide closures when the entire organization is closed (not including holidays)
