Office of Development

The Office of Development is principally responsible for securing the understanding and philanthropic support of the private sector for the Institute and its programs. The Office focuses its efforts on obtaining commitments for major and principal gifts to the Institute and its associated foundation(s) and leads the comprehensive fundraising efforts, which results in gift revenues in excess of $100 million annually and nearly $200 million in new gifts and commitments during Fiscal Year 2020. Support is sought to enable the Institute and its colleges, schools, and other programs to achieve strategic objectives that will keep our educational programs on the leading edge of discoveries and developments.

COLLEGE OF DESIGN

In 1908, Georgia Tech taught its first course in Architecture. Later in that year, a curriculum was created and organized. The first degree from the Department of Architecture was granted in 1911. After World War II, the School of Architecture was created. In the next decades, three additional programs—Industrial Design in 1940, City Planning in 1952, and Building Construction in 1958. In 1975, the College of Architecture was formed to include all four programs, and a doctoral program in Architecture was established in 1982. The Department of Music became the fifth academic discipline in the College of Architecture in 1991. By 2010, all five of the disciplines were growing and all of the programs were reorganized into five schools. With this sustained growth, and in an effort to reflect the commonality of the five disciplines, the College took a bold step and was renamed the College of Design.

Today, 111 years later, the College of Design provides a studio-based curriculum that focuses on design at the intersection of innovation and technology to prepare students for the complexities and challenges of the 21st century. We use “design thinking” to develop new technologies, anticipate the future of cities and buildings, and expand technologies to solve global issues. We emphasize human-centered design in all disciplines from digital products to smart buildings and from urban cities to robotic musicians. Our design research encompasses today’s most pressing human and built environment issues, including accessibility, sustainability, smart cities, as well as health, robotics and music technology.

With a faculty of 100+ including professors of the practice, our students are well-prepared to become thought-leaders of the future addressing practical and technical as well as social and sustainable challenges in our 21st century urban and suburban centers. Our students have the advantage of being educated by scholars-teachers and professors of practice who bring both academic and practical expertise to the classroom.
