AnnieCannons – Student Success Coordinator

AnnieCannons is seeking a full-time Student Success Coordinator to serve as a mentor, coach, counselor, and a champion for the success of students. This position is key in furthering the organization’s commitment to foster students’ safety, stability, support, agency, and identity through the praxis of wellness, equity, and social justice.

The ideal candidate will have strong relationship and community building skills with the knack to provide clarity, leverage confidence, and galvanize success during each student's step throughout the program. They have a proven ability to engage in conversations and counseling practices that are attuned to the role of race, gender, poverty, age, ability, and immigration status. They are patient, caring, and capable of working with students who may be entering into the program following a recent traumatic event, supporting them in their holistic journey as they develop a new career path. They do well to hold space with others. They are a strong communicator who can balance thoughtfulness, empathy, and accountability when addressing programmatic expectations. They are keen at resolving student issues from request through resolution and possess the passion and commitment for helping each student rediscover their power and potential. They will be committed to strengthening the impact of our programs and maintaining relevant, robust initiatives that bolster the hire-ability of students.

Who We Are

AnnieCannons is a nonprofit organization with a mission to train, prepare, and connect individuals who have experienced human trafficking to sustainable careers in tech. Our training program is designed to economically empower survivors through in-demand technology skills training, job readiness support, and work pathways into the technology industry. We believe that by linking survivors to meaningful careers and incomes, they will have the means to gain economic power, achieve financial independence, and permanently break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability that leads to exploitation.

In 2023, we will be launching our redesigned coding training program that is 100% remote and offered at no cost to our students. Our modular course design gives students the critical agency they deserve to move between classes of their choosing at their own pace. Our team and our students are spread across the continental U.S. and enjoy both synchronous and asynchronous scheduling and collaboration.

What You Will Do

The Student Success Coordinator may be based anywhere in the United States or its territories, reports to the Director of Programs, and is responsible for the following:

  • Develop and refine the student intake process and partner with students through every step of application, admission, registration, and pre-departure procedures, facilitating successful transitions into an academic lifestyle and career-development path
  • Proactively develop and maintain positive, supportive, and culturally relevant relationships with students, co-creating specific plans to identify and overcome obstacles, to connect goals with daily action, and to achieve academic, personal, and professional goals
  • Using a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach, counsel students through academic, emotional, behavioral, and social barriers or concerns; coach students with confidence-building strategies and effective interpersonal communication skills; and design wellness initiatives and opportunities to foster safety, stability, support, agency, and identity
  • Cultivate and maintain active relationships with community partner agencies with the goal of delivering continuity of care and support for students referred to them or to AnnieCannons

Who You Are and the Keys to Success

To be successful in this job, you will excel in three areas:

Equity and inclusion experience, skills, and values

  • Knowledge and familiarity with equity and inclusion principles: You recognize ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially with communities we serve. You are comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms. You understand the historical context for racial inequity and its present-day implications.
  • Familiarity with the implications of human trafficking: You are able to articulate the implications of human trafficking on individuals and the subsequent barriers they experience. You are willing to promote survivor safety, stability, support, agency, and identity.
  • Self-awareness and emotional intelligence: You are able to reflect on and describe the impact of one’s own identities - and those of others - in a given situation, decision, or process. You can demonstrate awareness of growing edges and are able to hear, reflect, act on, and learn from feedback about identity and equity.

Critical thinking and problem-solving ability

  • Strategist’s mind: You quickly grasp the subtleties of complex issues and identify patterns in challenges. You come up with insightful, pragmatic, equitable, and sustainable ways to tackle common challenges and produce positive change. You have a successful track record of taking a concept from idea to implementation
  • Vision and goal setting: You adapt to the evolving needs of the organization and think 3 (or 30) steps ahead to develop solutions that achieve goals in their realm.
  • Innovative and resourceful: You consistently overcome challenges and leverage resources to creatively solve problems. You propose solutions to issues without much guidance (but aren’t afraid to ask questions). You proactively ask for help, anticipate problems, and course-correct where needed.

Relationship building and community wellness

  • Trustworthiness and realness: You come across as genuine and say what you mean. You build authentic relationships, adhere to privacy and confidentiality practices, promote transparency, actively listen, and take ownership of your contributions and faults. You keep your word and follow through on commitments.
  • Coach and learning mentality: You help others grow using coaching, counseling, training, and feedback to support problem-solving. You view mistakes as learning opportunities, seeking and engaging well with feedback.
  • Instilling power and potential: You understand the implications of colonial history and are a staunch advocate who can mitigate crises, seek evolution, pursue pragmatic collaboration, push through systemic barriers, and foster community wellness.
