Job Details

One Hundred Miles (OHM) is dedicated to protecting and preserving Georgia's 100-mile coast through advocacy, education, and citizen engagement. We make progress toward our mission because we are inclusive of all friends and residents of Georgia's coast. We emphasize collaboration with conventional and unconventional conservation allies and celebrate our coast and the stories of the people working to protect it. OHM is a trusted resource and conservation leader across our coast and throughout the country.

The South Coast Advocate (SCA) will advocate for environmental conservation policies for the coast by organizing community members to advance and/or change public policy and resource allocation decisions made by governments that impact the South Coast. The SCA will ensure local decisions accommodate coastal population growth and address sea level rise while protecting wildlife, people, and culture throughout the South Coast counties (Glynn, Camden, and other counties as needed.)

  • Educate and engage citizens on the South coast in planning and policy decisions that effectively address development and coastal hazards that can harm the environment and community health.
  • Create and implement campaigns to achieve organizational goals through direct action organizing, grassroots advocacy, and communications.
  • Follow planning and policy agendas being considered by local governments in the South Coast counties.
  • Create and implement campaigns to oppose proposals threatening important natural resources, historic areas, and disadvantaged communities.
  • Work regionally to ensure any new proposals on the South Coast adequately account for sea level rise.
  • Develop new partnerships and strengthen existing partnerships with businesses, corporations, other organizations, and neighborhood groups to advocate for growth management policies and practices that protect coastal people and wildlife.
  • Work with media outlets and social networks to raise awareness about OHM projects within the South Coast.
  • As needed, assist the CEO/President and Vice President of Coastal Conservation with lobbying efforts and federal campaigns.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree and/or three years of experience. Preferred degree/experience in planning, organizing, or conservation
  • Must have experience working or volunteering with social justice or environmental justice efforts, environmental or historic conservation efforts, grassroots organizing, campaign building and strategizing, or policymaking
  • Ability to work constructively and creatively in a team atmosphere – both inside and outside of the organization
  • Ability to think through issues and create an appropriate strategy to support or oppose an issue
  • Demonstrated experience working independently
  • Ability to accept criticism from outside the organization and interest in getting constructive feedback from within
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Excellent computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office 365 and Dropbox
  • Experience using presentation software (e.g., Adobe or Canva) and GIS Mapping a plus

This is a full-time position that is based along Georgia's coast, with occasional remote work a possibility. This position will require the employee to travel as needed to communities across the Georgia coast. Must be an advocate at heart, appreciate the uniqueness of Georgia's coastal environment and its communities and cultures, have a passion for justice and have an interest in community planning and environmental conservation.

Interested candidates should email a resume and cover letter describing their qualifications and interest in the position to HR@onehundredmiles[dot]org. OHM offers a competitive salary based on experience and a comprehensive benefits package.

Submissions without a cover letter will not be considered. Please, no telephone inquiries. Due to the volume of applicants, only those who best match the position’s needs will be contacted. One Hundred Miles is an equal opportunity employer.
