American Humane seeks an experienced animal welfare professional to serve are our new Farm Standards and Science Coordinator for the first and largest third-party farm animal welfare audit program in the nation, the American Humane Certified program. This position reports to both the Chief Veterinary Officer and the Director, Farm Program Operations. This a fully remote position that will involve some travel.

Position summary:  

The Farm Standards and Science Coordinator is responsible for management, implementation, and development of standards and science for the first and largest third-party farm animal welfare audit program in the nation, the American Humane Certified program. The Coordinator provides advanced support for American Humane Certified producers and others in the animal agriculture and food industries and works with the Farm team on the American Humane Certified farm animal welfare standards and their implementation in field. 

The person in this role seeks to ensure that sound and up-to-date scientifically based animal welfare standards and practices remain at the core of American Humane’s Farm Certification Program.  The Coordinator works collaboratively with and reports directly to the organization’s Chief Veterinary Officer and the Director, Farm Program Operations.   

In cooperation with program and senior leadership, the Farm Standards and Science Coordinator will contribute to large scale projects related to process improvement and strategic planning and growth of the farm program.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and manage American Humane Certified standards and related documents and communicate with American Humane Certified Producers regularly
  • Provide oversight regarding standards development, interpretation, and implementation
  • Manage day-to-day inquires, questions, and responses regarding our standards, interpretations of our standards, review and interpretation of research and science as it relates to our standards
  • Write reports, memos, and correspondence in response to questions regarding the American Humane Certified program and standards
  • Prepare and communicate technical information to internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare and present information regarding current research and standards at industry events and trainings
  • Meet with producers and advisory scientists
  • Manage and engage the Farm Program Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and outside scientific advisors to ensure judicious use of their expertise, volunteer time, and energy
  • Ensure that animal welfare standards and guidelines reflect new research and technology; review regularly and in consultation with the SAC, make recommendations for revision of existing or the development of new standards as needed
  • Ensure that all scientific language and content in program and informational materials and web site are accurate and up to date
  • Monitor national and international farm animal health and welfare trends as well as legislative and regulatory activity and keeps senior management updated on emerging issues
  • Manage large scale projects as needed
  • Represent AHC at scientific meetings and workshops on animal welfare and farm animal science and research
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Farm Program at conferences, trade shows, industry meetings and for other public speaking engagements, coordinating with the Director, Farm Program Operations

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Advanced degree (including DVM/PhD/MS) in animal welfare, animal agriculture or related field preferred but not required
  • Diversity of experience in and understanding of some or all of the following fields preferred: agricultural animal health and welfare, agriculture industry (including allied groups), food supply chain, government (state or national), farm management, principles and practices associated with animal welfare including animal husbandry and/or agricultural or humane education
  • Knowledge or experience in the poultry, swine, dairy, and beef industries strongly desired
  • Successful program management experience, including managing standards, research, and/or auditing strongly desired
  • Demonstrated theoretical, technical and practical expertise in the animal welfare space
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; active listening
  • Ability to translate complex, technical ideas/matters into easily understandable terms for a lay person or the general public
  • Adept at building collaborative relationships and demonstrating diplomacy with diverse constituencies, including farmers/ranchers, trade organizations, retailers, food services, and academics
  • Solid track record of building and maintaining professional relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Proficient in MS Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective and timely decisions
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to uphold the tenets of the program
  • Takes a collaborative and proactive approach in addressing program needs
  • Strong documentation and presentation skills
  • Ability to work proactively and independently and deliver results under tight timelines and in a remote work environment
  • Comfortable in environments with intensive animal production
  • Familiarity with or sensitivity to animal disease biosecurity protocols and practices
  • Ability to work with team members to successfully meet annual program goals
  • Maintain professional demeanor at all times

Physical demands and work environment: 

  • Position will be fully remote and follow a regular telework schedule based on organizational policy and manager discretion
  • Travel is required, including outside of regular office hours, some nights & weekends, often to remote or rural locations (estimate up to 25%)
  • Exposure to barns/facilities with intensive animal production
  • Exposure to bio secure environments, requiring donning of protective gear
  • Occasional lifting of boxes weighing more than 25 pounds
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be regularly required to:
    • Sit for extended periods
    • Look at and work off of a computer screen for extended periods
    • Talk, hear, and exchange information over the telephone and in person
