The Refugee and Migrant Rights division of Human Rights Watch is seeking applicants for the position of Associate to provide administrative support to the team. This is an 8-month, fixed term, full-time position for parental leave coverage. The Refugee and Migrant Rights Division works to defend the human rights of refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people (RMASIDPs) worldwide and to investigate and expose human rights abuses against them. This position reports to the Director of Refugees and Migrant Rights based in Washington, DC. The successful candidate should be available to take this position by October 24, 2022.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely as local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities: 

1. Provide administrative support to the Refugee and Migrant Rights Division Director, including scheduling and finances;

2. Assist with preparing, drafting, proofreading, editing, formatting, coding, and/or distributing materials such as news releases, reports, visuals, graphics, briefing papers, op-eds, publications and web content;

3. Support the research and advocacy work of the team by attending and supporting relevant meetings, conducting desk research, and other related duties;

4. Maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;

5. Assist with recruiting and coordinating interns and recruiting division staff; and

6. Carry out other duties as required. 

Qualifications: 

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in human rights, humanitarian response, international relations, social science or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with strong attention to detail are required. 

2. Familiarity with Human Rights Watch systems and processes is ideal.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Proficiency in Arabic, Turkish, or French would be helpful but is not required. 

4. Demonstrated commitment to international human rights is required. 

5. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks are required. 

6. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required. 

7. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required. 

8. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is Experience with web coding and Concur is desirable.

Salary and BenefitsSalary range starts at $51,583. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, a retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
