Job Details

The Director of Finance provides operational and programmatic support to the organization. The Director of Finance supervises the Accounting/Finance
Department and is the financial representative for the organization. The Director of Finance reports directly to the Executive Director (ED) and directly assists on all strategic and tactical matters as they relate to budget management, cost benefit analysis, forecasting needs and securing of new funding. The Director of Finance will oversee all compliance and recognition of government (federal-state) contracts and private grants. He or she must be ale to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline oriented workplace while managing an accounting/finance staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing tasks necessary to achieve the organizations mission and help execute staff succession and growth plans.
  • Prepare all financial reports for review by the ED and for presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Work with the finance/audit committee of the board of directors to develop and carry out short and long term investment and financial management strategies.
  • Oversee the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including organizational revenue/expense reports, balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational, departmental and fund accounting practices.
  • Key officer in ensuring the organization's compliance with Uniform Guidance
  • Oversee all purchasing and payroll activity.
  • Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization and oversee federal and state awards and programs.
  • Participate in the selection of an outside audit firm and manage the firm in the preparation of the annual financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and with federal, state and other required agency required supplemental schedules and information.
  • Establish and monitor all banking activities of the organization.
  • Ensure adequate cash flow to meet the organization's operational needs.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate reporting of all local, state and federal information and tax returns including the Form 990, payroll deposits and Forms 941 and 940 and other applicable forms. oversee the production of monthly reports including bank reconciliations and funder periodic reports .
  • Oversee pension plans, business insurance plans and health care coverage of employees.
  • Prepare and maintain an accounting practices and procedures manual and train all appropriate staff on its use.
  • Oversee the maintenance of inventory of all fixed assets, including assets purchased with government funds assuring all are in accordance with funder regulations.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.

Qualifications

The Director of Finance should be a seasoned and mature leader with 8-12 years of broad finance experience in financial accounting and reporting for not-for-profit organizations. The Director of Finance should have experience in managing finance and reporting for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources including government (state and federal) contracts and affiliate structure with diverse program areas and a national focus. In addition the Director of Finance should have:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • CPA credential.
  • Eight or more years of experience in financial accounting for a not-for-profit organization.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of nonprofit accounting
  • Knowledge and understanding of Office of Management and Budget 2CFR 200 Uniform Guidance.
  • Experience in federal grant financial management.
  • Experience with information technology to manage the accounting function and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team and project management and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills.

Salary: From $50,000.00 per year
