MENTAL HEALTH COORDINATOR

Position Summary: Reporting to the Chief Program & Equity Officer, The Mental Health Coordinator will work in conjunction with Enrollment, Academic, and Scholar Services team members to provide holistic support services for Oliver students and families using an anti-racist, anti-oppression lens. The Mental health Coordinator will address the needs of students struggling academically, socially, and emotionally or with personal issues to maximize the student's educational success. The Mental health Coordinator will assess the needs of the students and families and identify resources to strengthen personalized support.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide perspective to the Enrollment Team during the admissions process of reviewing incoming cohort members.
  • Work collaboratively with the Scholar Immersion staff and faculty to conduct assessments, identify, and coordinate care and resources for SIP students and families.
  • Collaborate across departments to design and implement a mental wellness curriculum for middle, high school and college students.
  • Provide counseling support during the Scholar Immersion program, including an onsite week-long boarding experience. 
  • Develop and lead family workshops on adolescence, child development, transitions to high school and college, mental health and the BIPOC experience in predominantly white schools.
  • Consult with parents/guardians regarding ways they can assist the student(s) in becoming successful in and out of school.
  • Respond to both urgent needs of SIP and Oliver Scholars and families; manage response plans on an ongoing and comprehensive basis.
  • Provide in-person and/or virtual short-term counseling and mental health interventions to Oliver Scholars in high school and college.
  • Provide referrals for families and students to service providers including long-term counseling, academic, social-emotional, and daily life needs.
  • Work collaboratively with Scholar Counselors and support staff from partner schools to effectively coordinate and advocate for support services for scholars and families.
  • Provide training and staff development to Oliver's colleagues in areas of developing interest and learning as an organization.
  • Maintain a system for accurate and current documentation/records on all scholars and families Abides by Oliver Scholars Code of Ethics, in addition to those required by his or her professional specialty area.
  • Understands and adheres fully to requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability Protection Act (HIPPA).

DESIRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Familiarity with strength-based assessment and intervention processes as well as youth development principles.
  • Understanding nuances of trauma, ADHD, and other LD symptoms with the ability to identify interventions to support.
  • Capable of assisting culturally, racially, linguistically, and economically diverse students and parents in navigating all aspects of the educational landscape.
  • Commitment to anti-racist practices with an understanding of practices that are systematically and structurally embedded within schools' policies, norms, and practices to the detriment of Black/Brown, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)
  • Familiarity with independent and highly selective public schools is a plus.
  • Show exceptional judgment and integrity, including maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, or Social Work
  • 2-3 years of experience working with adolescents 3
  • -5 years in education, community-based or mental health settings New York State Licensure in Mental Health field (LMHC, LMFT, LICSW)
  • Proficiency in Spanish and/or experience with linguistically diverse populations a plus Self-motivated leader who can work independently as well as be part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, community agencies, and all program staff
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills (including public speaking).
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
