The Presbytery of Greater Atlanta is a regional office of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and serves 80+ churches, 20+ new worshiping communities, and 400+ ministers within our twenty-county region. The Director of Finance and Property serves alongside ten other staff members who support the ministries of the Presbytery. Working with churches and their congregants, ministers, and Presbytery volunteers, the staff works to carry out the mission of the Presbytery which is to be a “creator, catalyst and equipper for growing healthy, vital congregations and equipping healthy, innovative leaders in all regions of the presbytery.”

The Director of Finance and Property of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta (PGA) oversees the financial and property-related processes of the Presbytery to meet goals consistent with the Presbytery’s mission. The Presbytery Office operates in a hybrid work environment, both at the Presbytery Office and remotely. The Director works closely with Presbytery staff, volunteers, and Presbytery committees (Operations, Grants).

This is a part-time position, 30 hours per week, with benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial -

  • Oversee all aspects of the Presbytery finances, including investments, cash flow, budgets, giving, designated funds, and annual audit, collaborating with the Financial Support Specialist, who provides the bookkeeping function.
  • Report and interpret Presbytery financial results and outlooks and advise the Operations Committee, Presbytery Council, and the Presbytery on implications.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Presbytery staff and churches on financial issues.
  • Identify and implement process improvements in the PGA financial processes for increased effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Work with Administrative Commissions constituted to dissolve or close churches.
  • Oversee the distribution of assets associated with the sale of church property, consistent with the net proceeds policy.
  • Transmit Presbytery information and coordinate signing of documents required by financial institutions for Presbytery guarantee of church loans.

Property -

  • Oversee the several properties owned by the Presbytery (on average 5-7), including agreements regarding ongoing and long-term maintenance, revenues, expenses, insurance coverage, and planning for future strategic use. 
  • Report and interpret regularly to the Operations Committee on properties owned by the Presbytery.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to Presbytery staff and congregations on property issues, typically regarding transactions that require Presbytery approval such as loans, leases, and right-of-way.
  • Represent the Presbytery in property transactions, such as sales or lease negotiations.
  • Serve as the primary contact for legal actions regarding properties.

Advocacy and Education -

  • Advise congregations on financial and property topics, questions, and issues.
  • Advocate for the Presbytery concerning the importance of congregational financial support of the Presbytery. This includes providing education and emphasizing the connectional nature of the church, emphasizing giving, and educating congregational leadership about how funds are used for mission.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Education: bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years in financial and/or property-related roles.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of Presbyterian Church (USA) churches, especially property issues, how property usage is evolving, and church use of property for shared mission.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of financial and property matters.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to influence others in a healthy way and harmonize groups working toward common goals.
  • Ability to contribute to creating and maintaining a positive, hopeful environment while addressing challenges.
  • A high degree of emotional and spiritual maturity and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Flexible, well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Self-starter with a high-performance work ethic.

OTHER:

The Director of Finance and Property must be able to travel to various congregations within the Presbytery territory and must be willing to be flexible in work hours to act quickly on time-sensitive matters.
