Job Details

The Davies Shelters is a nonprofit homeless shelter that provides safe shelter, compassionate care, and case management for neighbors experiencing homelessness in Rome, Georgia. Founded in 2003 and named in honor of Rome retired minister Bill Davies, the organization operates a 16-bed men’s shelter; a women’s shelter with beds for 8 single women and 4 women with children; a free in-house counseling program; and a food program that includes a working farm and mobile farmers market. The Davies Shelter is guided by three principles: that all have sacred worth; that all are on a restorative journey; and all should be met with a welcome community.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall executive and operational responsibility for Davies Shelters’ programs, staff, funding, and execution of its mission.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Ensure consistent quality and day-to-day management of financial, administrative, fundraising, and communication systems of the organization.

  • Manage the programs and special projects of the organization, including developing effective systems for program planning, management, and evaluation.

  • Maintain, support, and collaborate with a strong Board of Directors and Advisory Board; collaboratively plan and lead board meetings; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction.

  • Develop systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure successes and effectively communicate them to the board, funders, and other constituents.

  • Lead, manage, and support staff through hiring, supervision, and evaluation with a particular focus on developing a cohesive and supportive work environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.

  • Ensure effective financial management and sound stewardship of resources by working with the board and staff to develop an annual budget; managing resource development; and coordinating with staff and accountant to ensure proper fiscal management and regulatory compliance.

  • May perform other duties as required for successful operation of the organization and fulfillment of its mission.

Outreach & Community Engagement

  • Actively engage board members, volunteers, partner agencies, faith-based partners, and funders in the work and mission of the Davies Shelters through speaking engagements, volunteer opportunities, and strategic partnerships.

  • Develop, foster, and manage missionally-aligned community partnerships that enhance and expand the level of services and positive outcomes for guests.

  • Ensure systems are in place that foster safe, effective, and meaningful volunteer opportunities and engagement.

  • Represent the mission of the Davies Shelters in all promotional efforts to faith-based, civic, and community groups and advocate for those experiencing homelessness to the general public.

  • Develop effective strategies and systems for recruiting and retaining advocates of the Davies Shelters including volunteers, donors, and community supporters.

Fundraising & Communications

  • Oversee staff and board efforts in maintaining and expanding a comprehensive revenue generating strategy that includes individual donors, church donors, business donors, major donors, foundation grants, and government grants.Maintain, deepen and refine all systems of communications—from digital presence to external relations to internal communications systems with the goal of creating a strong and consistent brand.

  • Invest heavily in developing and maintaining relationships with key funders - both organizations and individual donors.

  • Oversee and assist in the development of funding proposals, renewals, and grant reporting.

  • Foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization - from the Board of Directors to the staff and volunteers.

Job Requirements

The Executive Director should be the embodiment of the Davies Shelter’s guiding belief that everyone has sacred worth, everyone is on a restorative journey, and everyone should be met with welcome community. All candidates should have proven leadership, management, and resource development experience.

Specific requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in social work, nonprofit or public administration, or a related field strongly preferred.

  • At least six years of progressively responsible management experience in one or more nonprofit organizations, ideally serving low-income, high-need populations, with strong preference that the work be with homeless adults.

  • Strong experience working with diverse clientele and staff populations and demonstrated cultural competence. Working knowledge of crisis intervention principles and techniques preferred.

  • Ability to maintain focus on organizational vision while attending to necessary and appropriate details.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and projects.

  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.

  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.

  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to the program implementation and strategy.

  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed

Physical Requirements:

  • Up-to-date and continued vaccination status to include, but not limited to, COVID-19 and seasonal flu

  • Background checks will be conducted on all final candidates

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods and lift 20-50 pounds

Compensation:

  • Salary range of $55,000-$70,000 based on qualifications and experience
