About Us

Sur Legal Collaborative is a new legal services non-profit organization located in the Metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia area working at the intersection of labor and immigrant rights. By collaborating directly with communities and grassroots groups, we seek to democratize legal knowledge, and to provide legal support to movements fighting for economic, racial, and social justice in the Deep South (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, North and South Carolina) and to end the labor abuse to deportation pipeline.

Job Summary

Sur Legal Collaborative is seeking a highly skilled Operations Manager to oversee the organization’s day-to-day operations, finances, human resources, and federal and state compliance matters. The Operations Manager will be an integral part of Sur Legal’s management team and will directly support the organization’s mission.  Further, the Operations Manager will hold the organization accountable to our internal values around the right to happy and healthy workplaces including our own staff. In its formative years, Sur seeks to operationalize policies and practices that establish fair compensation and humane working conditions, and avert common non-profit workforce ills like burnout, secondary trauma, and high turnover. The right candidate will bring enthusiasm for this organizational priority and the technical expertise to implement it with leadership’s support. Duties and assignments will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Duties

Operations (approx. 40% of role)

  • Build organizational capacity and establish infrastructure for the effective day to day operations of Sur Legal. Develop and manage systems of record keeping, including training schedules, community contacts, community meeting schedules, etc. Develop and manage systems for client referrals to other legal nonprofits and private attorneys. Provide basic information technology troubleshooting, new hire computer set-up and email access, as well as minor help desk functions. Assist management team with maintaining consistent external communications. Manage the general organizational email inbox and respond to all inquiries at least once a week.
     

Finance, Human Resources, and Compliance (approx. 40% of role)

  • Responsible for working with contracted financial and accounting vendors on all matters related to budgeting, revenue, and expenses, including reconciliation. Coordinate day-to-day financial operations including running payroll, processing deposits, payables, reimbursements, and invoicing, as well as banking. Lead annual budget planning and monthly forecast process. Manage all requests for financial and operational information as well as data. Maintain filings to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements including quarterly payroll tax payments and annual 990 filings.
  • Serve as the Human Resources lead with the ability to supervise, manage, motivate, reprimand, and commend staff.
  • Maintain employee files, ensure timely annual performance reviews, conducting onboarding, and other personnel administration functions. Coordinate employee engagement strategies and initiatives that contribute to a thriving organizational culture. Support the orientation of new employees and/or interns.

Administrative and Infrastructure (approx. 20% of role)

  • Build organizational capacity and infrastructure for effective day to day operations.
  • Contribute to the development and integration of new processes including organizational policies, standard operating procedures and/or an operations manual.
  • Manage vendor relationships to ensure timely service delivery, invoice payment, and all workplace equipment and tools are operational.
  • Maintain, administer, and train others on effective use of platforms and systems, including case management software, timekeeping, digital editing software.
  • Maintain office supplies, order equipment, and set up purchase orders.
  • Create and maintain annual operations calendar. 
  • Provide administrative support to staff as appropriate, including scheduling, travel arrangements, etc.
  • Serve as liaison and administrative support for Board of Directors and Board committee meetings.
  • Perform general tasks assigned by Executive Director, as needed.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of office management/administrator experience or possess a college degree, preferably human resources or accounting related.
  • Lived experience in the labor movement or as a directly impacted immigrant.
  • Strong commitment to Sur Legal’s mission and values.
  • High levels of professionalism, collaboration, integrity, and compassion.
  • Outstanding organization and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Extensive experience with administration, office management, and event planning.
  • Ability to build consensus and work within coalitions.
  • Flexible and adaptive work style with the ability to thrive in a growing, dynamic, mission-driven environment.
  • Experience in the legal field and among the client communities we serve (people of color and immigrants, marginalized workers) is strongly desired.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A commitment to racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences.
  • Self-starter, diligent, and able to meet strict deadlines while under pressure.
  • A passion for social justice, racial justice, and/or immigrants’ rights work.
  • Spanish fluency is a plus.

 

Compensation & Benefit Package

The Operations Manager is full time, salaried, non-exempt, management position at the rate of $80,000 per year. This position is remote/WFH.

Sur Legal Collaborative offers a competitive benefit package including medical insurance (paid 50% by the employer with dependents eligible for coverage), fully paid vision and dental insurance, self-managed Paid Time Off (PTO), 10 paid holidays, an end of the year 2-week office shutdown (between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day), as well as an annual wellness stipend.
