POSITION TITLE:  Regional Advocacy Associate - South

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO:  Director, State based Advocacy

SALARY:  $50,000 - 56,000 USD

LOCATION: Remote, with preference for candidates in the South.

The Community Justice Action Fund (Community Justice), a project of Tides Advocacy, is a nonprofit organization building power for and with communities of color to end gun violence. We were formed by activists and survivors of gun violence to help support and empower communities directly impacted by violence. Community Justice focuses full-time on building power and infrastructure to end gun violence in communities of color. We do this by creating organizing and communications strategies that engage and empower communities that are most impacted by gun violence.

The Community Justice Action Fund is seeking an experienced Regional Advocacy Associate. The Advocacy Associate is responsible for the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Connect with existing supporters and elected officials from Community Justice and Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Coalitions to build political power and advance policy. 
  • Organize and facilitate regular coalition meetings in priority Southern states and cities. 
  • Organize direct and grassroots advocacy events to influence key stakeholders to advance solutions to address gun violence in priority communities. 
  • Work with existing community violence intervention and prevention programs to strengthen relationships and learn how policy change could better support their efforts.
  • Recruit, organize and train new volunteer leaders and activists to advance policy
  • Monitor state legislation in prioritized states relating to gun violence or the root causes of violence in Black and Brown communities.
  • Build and maintain existing strategic partnerships with leading state and local organizations working to influence legislation.
  • Track support levels and statements from state legislators on efforts to address gun violence or the root causes of violence impacting Black and Brown communities.
  • Develop resource documents, summaries and materials for state advocacy or educational efforts.
  • Assist in the recruitment of state and local elected officials for Policymakers for Peace, our nonpartisan national network of elected officials working to end gun violence.
  • Represent Community Justice and our policy priorities at public events, press events, hearings and other public activities. 

 

Job Requirements:

  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, racial justice and/or gun violence prevention organizing, and fluency and understanding of the challenges facing Black and other communities of color, immigrant communities, as well as low-and moderate-income families.
  • Recommended 1-3  years experience in issue or campaign organizing, particularly at the local or state level.
  • Share progressive values to uplifting communities suffering from violence, including a commitment to ending gun violence, decarceration, ideally with a fluency and understanding the origins of gun violence, the harms of criminalization, and incarceration.
  • Comfort and flexibility in a work environment with remote communication, coordination, and supervision.
  • Success as an independent, self-motivated, and strong leader that is able to drive projects and programs to completion in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners.
  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
