Position Overview

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) seeks an experienced fundraising professional as Director of Development to build external relationships and increase stakeholder investment at the nation’s premier museum and library of Lincoln and Illinois history.  This senior level position will oversee all aspects of individual and corporate giving ensuring that the ALPLM is maximizing use of public and private resources.  The ideal candidate is outgoing and energetic and has a demonstrable record of raising money.  We invite qualified applicants to apply for the position to help ALPLM to continue to chronicle the life of one of our nation’s greatest Presidents and the history of Illinois.

Job Responsibilities

As the Development Director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum (ALPLM), serves as the strategic leader and principal fundraiser for development activities including individual and corporate major gifts, grants, sponsorship, planned giving, and future capital campaigns:

  • Serves authoritatively as a policy formulating administer in the planning, directing, and implementing of policies and procedures affecting the division.
  • Develops fundraising plans and proposals with short and long-term goals.
  • Recommends annual fundraising goals and ensures that goals are tracked and met.
  • Organizes and coordinates all potential development ideas from throughout the agency and determines the appropriate fundraising approach.
  • Identifies potential non-state income streams, including grants, and sets a course of action for the agency.
  • Liaises with other constitutional offices to ensure unappropriated funds are transferred and held in appropriate accounts.
  • Evaluation the impact of private donations as a mechanism for expansion of ALPLM programming, exhibitions, educational content, and services.

Oversees all facets of donor stewardship and relationships ensuring donors are cultivated, solicited, and recognized:

  • Builds relationships with groups and individuals who share the ALPLM’s values and goals through meetings and written and verbal communication.
  • Collaborates with other agency divisions to identify potential funding opportunities including how to use agency content and collections to strategically make the case for financial support.
  • Requests monetary and in-kind donations and facilitates the receipt of donations.
  • Develops and implements donor recognition methods including sponsorships, naming rights, and signage.
  • Implements and maintains fundraising software and a donor database.

Coordinates with other agency staff to create, implement, and grow a membership program locally and regionally:

  • Serves as the point of contact for corporate and non-profit members.
  • Provides Guest Experience staff with training and talking points regarding the membership program.
  • Answers complex and technical questions on the membership program received by Guest Experience staff.
  • Utilizes electronic membership system and/or databases in the course of performing membership related duties.

Acts as a spokesperson for the agency including representing the ALPLM in meetings, on community boards, and at conferences and special events:

  • Travels to attends meetings, conferences, and events.

Coordinates with other agency staff to ensure donations meet required standards.

  • Works with the Chief Fiscal Officer to ensure compliance with charitable giving standards and state accounting regulations.
  • Works with the Chief Legal Counsel to stay informed of tax planning and philanthropy for possible impacts on development strategy.
  • Works with the ALPLM Board of Trustees to ensure gifts are received in compliance with statutory requirements.

Serves as a full-line supervisor:

  • Assigns and reviews work.
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
  • Counsels staff regarding work performance.
  • Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
  • Establishes annual goals and objectives.
  • Approves time off.
  • Adjusts first level grievances.
  • Effectively recommends and imposes discipline up to and including discharge.
  • Prepares and signs performance evaluations.
  • Determines and recommends staffing needs.

Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to six (6) years of progressively responsible experience leading and developing advancement teams including proven involvement in the acquisition of major gifts for a public or business organization.
  • Requires two (2) years of hands-on experience soliciting and receiving six- and seven-figure gifts.

 

Preferred Qualifications (In order of significance)

  • Two (2) years’ experience with the cultivation and management of federal and private grants.
  • Experience with the creation and implementation of a development program strategically consistent and in alignment with the institutions mission and vision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to make and nurture strong and enduring relationships.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing to broad audiences including in public settings, to staff members, and to external audiences about the exhibit program and the ALPLM in general.
  • Skilled in customer services including interacting with external audiences.
  • The ability to collaborate with a team and demonstrate patience and leadership in high pressure situations. 

 

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass a background check. Requires ability to work overtime to meet deadlines.
  • Requires regular travel within the state and occasional out-of-state travel.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to keep and maintain an agency supplied cell phone.

Compensation

Anticipated salary range: $6,500 - $8,000/monthly

Work Hours and Location

Work Hour: Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 5:00pm

Work Location: 212 N. 6th Street, Springfield, IL 62701 – This is a non-remote position.
