Job Details

A Band of Voters (ABOV) is a diverse non-profit organization that turns out student voters at large community colleges and public universities through a unique program that changes the culture of voting through celebration, education and voting with friends. ABOV is seeking a focused, organized, enthusiastic and reliable coordinator to work under the direction of the organization’s founder. Students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

ABOV is currently working to help students turnout to vote in the midterms through a Fellowship at 11 campuses in Southern California and several out of state. Our focus is on Minority serving institutions and underserved communities. Our program, #Party4OurPower, supports student leaders as they organize large events to help build the political power of their generation through voting and other forms of Civic Empowerment.

In addition, our work is the first step in implementing the historic legislation ABOV and our Student Advisory board passed, AB963: The Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act, the first student voting rights law of its kind. Our board included students from the NAACP YC and March for Our Lives, who were the leaders of the effort. We are working directly with the Secretary of State’s Office and the Student Senate for the California Community Colleges to ensure the law is implemented.

This coordinator position is currently a 30 hour per week, part-time, non-exempt position. This position is currently scheduled for July - November 2022, but may be extended based on the needs of the organization and can possibly be extended to full time. A set schedule is very important. We will work with you to determine a set schedule that works best for your circumstances. Work days are Monday through Friday. Occasionally we hold workshops on Saturday mornings. Attendance at these workshops is preferred but not mandatory.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the organization’s Founder with administrative tasks
  • Coordinate program activities with campus fellows
  • Communicate and coordinate with vendors
  • Monitor incoming email and disseminate communications
  • Provide support for fundraising activities
  • Monitor and update social media

Please note: A cover letter required. See the requirements below.

Skills to get the job done:

  • Great attention to detail (you’re the person that notices that something is double booked, or brings the rechargeable battery – without being asked)
  • Strong communication skills (you’re a person that can write short engaging e-mail and proposals) or can decipher a long email into basic to-do’s).
  • Not afraid to be honest if you see something is amiss or if you have suggestions. (We encourage that).
  • Great organization skills
  • Great at keeping up with multiple e-mails on gmail.com.
  • Knowledge of google docs, google sheets, etc. (we mainly work with online documents).
  • Flexibility! – we’ll work with you and we respect each others’ schedules, but we also need someone that can get the work done when it needs to get done
  • Los Angeles or Orange County residents preferred
  • Ability to periodically work at office location preferred
  • Second language ability very helpful

Other skills that would be great to have, but not necessary:

  • Experience working, organizing or volunteering for election related organizations.
  • Knowledge of social media – TikTok, Twitter and Instagram, creating posts, finding/creating hashtags, working on different platforms
  • Knowledge of design – Canva, Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Premiere
  • Knowledge of Digital Organizing: using a CRM (we use Action Network and will be using Mobilize)
  • Experience with Wordpress and/or web maintenance (updating plug-ins)
