About Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented students who have been historically excluded from higher education on the path to college, and inspires high school and college students to become the next generation of leaders, advocates, and educators. BTSV’s seven-year college access and success program, which supports students from 7th grade to first year of college, has proven to be effective in preparing these students for college: a stunning 99% of BTSV graduates attend college immediately after high school.

BTSV’s tuition-free program provides year-round out-of-school time academic support, counseling, and advocacy for a diverse group of talented students, most of whom come from under-resourced communities and will be the first generation in their family to go to college. Through our students-teaching-students model, BTSV also provides a consummate professional development experience providing talented high school and college students the opportunity to understand the K-12 system and the drivers of educational inequities, and to design and teach classes under the direction of seasoned educators.

Located in San Jose, California, Breakthrough Silicon Valley is an affiliate of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a leading national service organization that acts as the national voice for over 25 Breakthrough sites across the country.

The Position

The Admissions Program Intern is a part of BTSV’s admissions team. In the fall, you’ll work with the team to support the launch of BTSV’s middle school admissions application. Most importantly, you’ll be the primary contact for prospective families and teachers, answering their questions and providing technical support as they’re submitting application materials. You’ll also develop presentations and marketing materials, and you’ll provide logistical support, such as partnering with school liaisons to schedule presentations for students and families both virtually and in person.

Data collection and management is also a big part of the job. You’ll use data to determine which recruitment strategies are most effective, create reports for school partners and other stakeholders, and utilize Salesforce to enter student data.

In the spring, you’ll support planning for BTSV’s summer programs, including outreach to families and enrolling admitted students into summer classes.

The Admissions Program Intern reports to the Director of Admissions and Middle School Programs.

What background and skills do you have?:

  • Proficient with MS Office and Google Suite
  • Experience working with data (pulling reports, basic Excel formulas)
  • Bilingual (Spanish)

“Breakthrough Spirit”: You’re a collaborative team player who is committed to excellence and open-minded, demonstrates a growth mindset, thinks creatively to solve problems, and works with a sense of humor and humility.

Commitment to Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s mission and goals as well as a passion for educational equity.

Bonus points if you’ve got:

  • Experience with Salesforce and/or FormAssembly
  • Experience creating videos, flyers, or other marketing materials, especially using Canva
  • Experience at a youth development or educational organization, particularly one focused on college access for first-generation students and students of color

We know that many strong candidates will not have all the skills we list. That’s OK. What else do you bring to the table? Please tell us!

Location, Commitment, and Compensation

BTSV maintains two offices in San Jose:

  • Bridges Academy: 1702 McLaughlin Ave, San Jose, CA 95122
  • Herbert Hoover Middle School: 1635 Park Ave, San Jose, CA 95126

Since you will be supporting BTSV’s students and families, as well as working closely with BTSV’s school district partners, this is an in-person position. You will have occasional flexibility to work from a home office when in-person work is not required. Occasional travel to partner school sites in San Jose is also required.

This is a part-time (15-20 hours per week), hourly, non-exempt position from mid-September 2022 through mid-May 2023. While we can accommodate your class schedule, you must have availability at least two afternoons per week in order to be considered. The compensation for this position is $20 per hour.

COVID-19 Information

BTSV requires all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (one dose of Johnson & Johnson, two doses of Moderna, or two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech). Proof of vaccination must be provided prior to your first day of employment. Employees may request accommodation if they have a qualifying medical condition or on the basis of sincerely held religious beliefs and practices.

BTSV is also continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation locally and will continue to comply with all state, county, city, and/or school district directives on PPE, social distancing, vaccination, and remote work as they evolve.
