The National Employment Law Project (NELP) seeks an experienced part-time Accounts Receivable Associate to join our finance team. This position will assist with the day-to-day accounting and administration functions and will support NELP’s fundraising operations. 

As a part-time role, this position offers tremendous flexibility for individuals seeking rewarding and challenging work but are not seeking to work full-time, while still providing access to NELP’s excellent benefits package. This position is 21 hours a week (equivalent to three days/week). Currently, NELP is working 100% remotely, with the option to voluntarily work at our offices. When NELP’s offices do open up again, this part-time position may work remotely up to two days a week.  We expect this position to work from one of our offices (Washington DC or New York City) at least one day a week as we value relationships among our team members.

NELP has a team of 55 staff people based across offices in New York City, Washington D.C., and Berkeley, CA, with a 12-person Board of Directors, an annual budget of $18M, and hundreds of partners in the field with whom we work to further our mission.

What You Will Do
You may be based in either NELP’s New York City or Washington D.C. office and will report to the Grants Controller. As our Accounts Receivable Associate, you will play a central role in ensuring the efficiency and accuracy of our finance and administrative operations. While not an exhaustive list of responsibilities, your work will include:

  • Working with the NELP finance team to produce analysis, forecasts and supporting schedules for our annual budget Preparing and making bank deposits using a remote deposit system and recording the deposits in the accounting system and into Salesforce. You will work with the development team to ensure that donation tracking in the accounting system reconciles with tracking in the Salesforce database. Providing regular reporting to our fundraising team on grant expenditures and spending analysis. Preparing and tracking invoice payments. Recording monthly and quarterly journal entries. Producing reports and trend analysis as required by management. Ensuring that NELP maintains complete financial records and an organized filing system. Helping the finance team prepare and support the annual audit. Assisting with various office administration functions if the need arises.

Who You Are

You have 2 to 5 years’ experience in accounting and financial reporting, ideally with a nonprofit. Preference to those with Accounts Receivable experience.

  • You enjoy working as part of a team and working with people from different departments within an organization, as well as helping them understand financial information. You are comfortable working with different levels of employees within an organization, as well as external vendors. You have strong attention to detail. You enjoy using analytical skills and tools. You are comfortable working with monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines and can prioritize them effectively. Advanced Excel skills as well as experience using accounting software (we use FundEZ, but similar experience is welcomed). Bachelor’s degree (or associates degree with equivalent work experience) in business, finance or accounting. Have an interest in the nonprofit financial realm. Ideally, you have an interest in labor law, policy, unions and worker’s rights. Can work and collaborate well with a diverse staff. Have an interested in expending your knowledge and understanding about the role that structural racism plays in our society and are committed to advancing NELP’s goal in centering racial equity. Must be eligible and authorized to work in the United States.

Start Date, Location, Compensation and Benefits:  NELP currently offers voluntary access to all office locations (Berkeley, New York City, or Washington D.C.) through September 30, 2022. When NELP returns to working in the physical office, staff may choose to work remotely up to two days per week; this hybrid model seeks to leverage both the benefits of working with colleagues in person and the benefits of flexible remote arrangements. This position will be in either the New York City or Washington, DC, office.  The start date will be as soon as possible. This position is in NELP’s bargaining unit, represented by National Organization of Legal Service Workers, UAW Local 2320. Classification and compensation for NELP bargaining unit positions is commensurate with relevant experience and education and based on NELP’s collectively bargained scales. Based on our union scale, the hourly rate for a part-time Accounts Receivable Associate with a bachelor’s degree is $36-$40 an hour. This is a non-exempt part-time position.
