Position Summary 

The Controller leads the finance operations of a $5+ million budget and manages the day to day functions of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The Controller will ensure that AVLF has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation. The Controller works closely with Finance Manager, Program Directors and their staff, to inform them of finance and accounting procedures and explore how the finance function can support program operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Requesting, Managing, Forecasting, Documentation, Tracking and Implementation of local, federal and government Grants/Funds
  • Oversee and maintain all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets, and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all audit activity.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports accurately and timely
  • Communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, while monitoring progress and changes; and keeping Board of Directors abreast of AVLF financial status.
  • Assist AVLF leadership in the annual budgeting, planning, administration and review of all financial plans and compare to actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Support the Director of Operations and the Executive Director in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensuring  that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program  requirements throughout the grant/fund period
  • Collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program
  • Directors vice presidents; continuously collaborate with program
  • Directors to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field with three to five (3 - 5) years of non-profit  experience, or ten (10) years of relevant accounting experience.
  • CPA, strongly desired but not required.
  • Experience managing state, federal and government grants both restricted and unrestricted of 7 figures or more required.  
  • In addition, desired experience includes but is not limited to: accounts payable/accounts receivables, bank & credit card reconciliations, preparation and reporting of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close financials, building forecast models, and preparing financial presentations for the Board of Directors. 
  • Experience with QuickBooks, bill.com, and advanced knowledge in Excel is plus.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • A track record in grants management related to compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants is essential.
  • Keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills, which allows for strategic data interpretation versus. simple reporting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating critical data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts to financial and non-financial individuals at all levels

Working Conditions 

Works in a fast-paced office environment with work requiring multi-tasking.  May require bending stopping and prolonged sitting and/or standing.
