Description

Heluna Health invites applicants for a full-time Public Health Investigator to be part of a dynamic team in the Applied Research Community Health Epidemiology & Surveillance (ARCHES) Branch of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH).

Under the direction of the HIV Surveillance Supervisor, the Public Health Investigator will: abstract medical record data from HIV/AIDS patients and work on supplemental surveillance projects, such as the Medical Monitoring Project.

If hired for this position, you will be required to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to your start date, or have a valid religious or medical reason qualifying you for an exemption (that may or may not require accommodation).

This is a temporary, grant-funded, full-time, benefitted position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health.

Pay rate: Starting at $30.29 per hour commensurate with experience

This position will be on a hybrid schedule of work on-site and telecommuting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Recruits and schedules interviews for participants in supplemental surveillance projects at various confidential locations and over the telephone.
  • Interviews and interacts with persons of varied cultural backgrounds, demonstrating good listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Performs record searches to locate contact information for recruitment of supplemental surveillance projects.
  • Abstracts medical records using supplemental surveillance structured database tool.
  • Performs data entry into surveillance databases.
  • Drafts and publishes protocols, letters, and materials for accessibility, security and confidentiality of HIV care.
  • Follows applicable federal, state, and local laws and guidelines governing the investigation, reporting, and management of HIV/AIDS cases.
  • Contacts clinicians at private medical practices, offices, and clinics who have recently diagnosed people with HIV to confirm diagnosis, obtain demographic information, interpret lab results, and performs extensive medical record review.
  • Using electronic and paper tools, including electronic tablets and laptop computers, collects and evaluates medical and epidemiological information concerning individuals infected with HIV.
  • Conducts routine follow-up of HIV-infected individuals, documenting disease progression and the use of antiretroviral therapy.
  • Follows project protocols and procedures in maintaining records and files pertaining to HIV investigations to ensure confidentiality and accuracy of data collected.
  • Participates as part of the HIV/AIDS Surveillance team: attends meetings/trainings and contributes to related supplemental surveillance projects as needed.
  • Applies working knowledge of medical terms and technology to facilitate communication with professional and lay people.
  • Answers questions from the public when appropriate or refers to the appropriate person or authority for questions outside the purview of assigned duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Six (6) months of verifiable experience working with a culturally diverse population providing health information, education, intervention, and/or referral services
  • Experience abstracting and reporting medical data

  • Knowledge of the medical and social services available in San Francisco to persons with HIV
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, email) and other software programs
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
