We emphasize collaboration with conventional and unconventional conservation allies and celebrate our coast and the stories of the people working to protect it every chance we get. One Hundred Miles is a trusted resource and leader in the community-protecting Georgia's coast forever.
The South Coast Advocate (SCA) will organize community members to advance public policy, management plans, and resource allocation decisions made by local and state governments. The SCA will ensure local decisions accommodate coastal population growth while protecting wildlife and culture and adequately addressing sea-level rise (SLR) throughout the Southern Coastal counties (Glynn, Camden, and other counties as needed.)
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Educate and engage citizens on the southern end of Georgia’s coast in planning and advocating for comprehensive solutions to address development, coastal hazards, and the effects of population growth related to the environment and quality of life for all local communities.
- Create and implement campaigns to achieve organizational goals by combining community engagement, grassroots advocacy, organizing, communications, and legal and legislative strategies.
- Create and implement campaigns aimed at opposing proposals that threaten natural resources, historic communities, and/or do not adequately account for SLR.
- Develop, strengthen, and nurture alliances and work in partnership with businesses, corporations, and other organizations to advocate for responsible growth management policies and local government acknowledgment of and accommodation for SLR.
- Work with media outlets and social networks to raise awareness about OHM projects we would like to advance or oppose.
- As needed, assist the CEO/President and Vice President of Coastal Conservation with lobbying efforts and federal campaigns.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of three years of experience in environmental or historical conservation
- Experience with environmental conservation grassroots organizing, campaign building and strategizing, policymaking, and community organizing experience
- Ability to work constructively and creatively in a team atmosphere – both inside and outside of the organization
- Ability to think through issues and create the appropriate strategy to move an issue(s) forward or to oppose an issue
- Demonstrated experience working independently to carry out programs and implement campaigns
- Ability to evolve skill set and accept criticism from outside the organization and constructive feedback from within
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent leadership skills
- Excellent computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office 365 and Dropbox
