About L.A. Works: L.A. Works is a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer action center that creates, manages, and implements hands-on community service projects throughout the greater Los Angeles area. We're committed to building a dedicated staff that reflects the diverse Los Angeles community. We are looking for enthusiastic, experienced individuals who share in our passion for service and our civic pride.

Additionally:

  • Our work matters and has a direct positive impact on our neighbors
  • We enjoy a casual, but focused office atmosphere (we roll up our sleeves and get to work)
  • We work on a hybrid model: mostly remote with the occasional in-person meeting or event

About the role: If you have the ability to translate an idea into a program, this position is for you! The right person for this role will offer up creative ideas rather than awaiting instructions, isn’t afraid of cold outreach, and is known to be the most organized person around.  Any previous experience with volunteer recruitment and outreach efforts are excellent, but not required.

The Disaster Preparedness Program Coordinator will focus efforts on emerging critical needs in the community with a primary focus on disaster resilience. Leading a team of AmeriCorps VISTA members, the Program Coordinator will leverage the power of volunteers to build the capacity of LA’s emergency and support networks through specialized recruitment and programming efforts. This role will be responsible for fulfilling the objectives set forth in a state agency grant, as well as supporting efforts in other critical issue areas.

Essential job functions: The list that follows is not intended to be comprehensive; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major responsibilities of the position. Incumbents may not be required to perform all roles listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

Oversee a team of five AmeriCorps VISTA members that will work directly with four to five nonprofits each falling into a specific service area (i.e. homelessness, education equity, food security, environmental justice, etc.) to:

  • Develop Signature Projects to provide door-to-door, peer-to-peer campaigns to distribute disaster preparedness material to LA’s most vulnerable populations.
  • Make strategic partnerships with community organizations to boost the engagement of LA’s volunteers through virtual and in-person events.
  • Develop written, customized Emergency Operations Plans (EOP) that prepare these nonprofit partners' efforts to mobilize volunteers in the case of disaster, including how they will be implemented, how the information will be disseminated, and how to engage volunteers quickly and effectively.
  • Manage issue-specific recruitment landing pages on L.A. Works’ website; creating and managing targeted recruitment postings per issue area.
  • Work in collaboration with the Climate Action Corps for volunteer recruitment, outreach, and event planning.
  • Provide general programmatic support alongside the Programs Department team.
  • Supervise and mentor the five AmeriCorps VISTA members through their year of service, providing feedback and support in a professional manner.
  • Participate in at least one of L.A. Works’ Internal Task Forces (i.e. Strategic Partnerships, DEI, Team FUN, Take Action, etc.).
  • Any and all other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Additional requirements:

  • Experience in formal or informal community organizing and/or outreach.
  • Experience and/or interest in working with vulnerable populations and/or those who have faced systemic barriers to accessing services.
  • Meet baseline responsibilities within a set schedule, including adhering to tracking and reporting requirements.
  • Experience with (or can quickly adopt) Zoom, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, and Salesforce.
  • Initiate NSWOP and criminal history check prior to hire.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation for regular travel throughout Los Angeles County.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends with notice.
  • Participate in an L.A. Works Taskforce (an organization-wide, collaborative team).
  • Support L.A. Works large-scale signature events and other all-organization wide needs.
