Our Mentors are individuals who raise their hand to volunteer. They join us from community groups, corporate partners, faith communities, or simply have a passion for helping others. They come from all walks of life, united by a desire to share their skills and life experiences to help families thrive.

By meeting our families where they’re at, Imagine LA volunteer mentors connect with them as people — not in denial of their differences, rather, inspired to empathize through them. When we honor the goals our families set, and work together to reach them, we all grow.

Once you raise your hand to volunteer, we walk together through your application, interview, training, and screening. We prepare all of our volunteer mentors to be the unconditional supporters that our families need. Finally, you meet your mentee and begin a meaningful, lasting relationship.

Eligibility

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Background check
  • Live in Greater Los Angeles
  • Complete training
  • Believe in the power of relationships
  • Desire to partner with families to meet their goals

Experience

  • Trips to the beach, help with homework, budgeting, resumé writing
  • Ongoing coaching and resources from your Family Team Manager (FTM)
  • Collaboration with your Mentor Team (all Mentors paired with members of the family)
  • Year-round calendar of volunteer and engagement opportunities with Imagine LA

Commitment

  • Two monthly visits with your Mentee (2 hours per visit)
  • Communication with your Mentee (minimum of 30 minutes per month)
  • Communication with ILA staff, and 1 monthly conference call with FTM
  • Quarterly potluck meetings with the family & FTM
  • Total of 6-8 hours every month for up to 18 months, based on the family’s needs

The success of our program relies on the fit between our Mentors and Families. If we determine that you’re a fit for the program, please be prepared for a “patient process.” Your match might happen within a week, or it could take a few months. We strive to move quickly, but for our families' success, a strong match is more important than rapid placement.

COVID-19 NOTE: As we all cope with the pandemic, the health and security of our families, mentors, and staff is our top priority. As such, our Mentorship program is *fully virtual* for the duration of the crisis. This includes shifting to virtual platforms for all training sessions, family & mentor kickoff meetings, and all mentor-mentee interactions. When local and national health guidelines are lifted, mentors and mentees will start/continue in-person activities.
