POSITION TITLE:  Chief Financial Officer FLSA: Exempt  

DEPARTMENT:  Accounting    

REPORTS TO:  President & CEO

REVISED:  June 28, 2022 

PRINCIPLE FUNCTION:  The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial matters of the organization, information technology, and restaurant management. The CFO will report to and work closely with the President and CEO. In addition, the CFO will collaborate with the senior leadership and the board of directors to develop and implement financial strategies across the organization. The CFO must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace while managing the entire finance department and staff. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES: Accounting Manager, IT Manager and Restaurant GM 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Assist in performing all tasks necessary to achieve the organization’s mission and financial goals. 
  • Ensure adequate controls are in place and that supporting documentation is approved and available for auditing. 
  • Collaborate with Sr. Team to provide the President & CEO and Finance Committee with an annual operating budget. 
  • Thinks strategically to position the Garden for growth.  Anticipates future needs and make recommendations on successfully achieving the financial goals necessary to support the desired outcomes. 
  • Oversee the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including Income Statement and Balance Sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational and contract/grant budgets.  Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions. 
  • Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization and oversee federal grants. 
  • Attend Board and Subcommittee meetings; including being the lead staff on the Finance/Investment/Audit committee to develop short, medium and long-term financial plans and projections. 
  • Monitor banking activities of the organization. 
  • Works with Finance Committee and Investment Advisors to transact and account for investment activities. 
  • Ensure adequate cash flow to meet the organization’s needs. 
  • Produce financial statements, budgets, forecasts and cash flow projections for use by President & CEO, as well as the Finance Committee and Board of Directors. 
  • Oversee general accounting operations of organization. 
  • Manage relationships with audit, insurance, legal, investment, banking and service providers. 

Internet Technology

  • Ensure that company software, hardware is up to date and that organizational risk is mitigated. 
  • Manage the role and efficiency of the department within the organization. 
  • Ensure security of company data and proper backs ups are in place and working properly. 
  • Data collection that informs financial decision-making 
  • Tracking Garden performance against annual metrics and budget 

Restaurant Management 

  • Ensure staff complies with company policy and is maintaining safety and food quality standards. 
  • Ensure costs are in line with budget. 
  • Ensure restaurant is exceptional, supports members and guests and maintains high rating for quality. 

Business Management 

  • Manage annual D&O and P&C insurance package renewal and general risk management of the organization. 
  • Negotiate and review contracts. 
  • Participates wholly in policy development as a member of the Sr. Management team. 
  • Remains up-to-date on non-profit best practices as well as state and federal laws regarding nonprofit operations and financial issues. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.  CPA preferred.  MBA a plus. 
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting, ideally in the nonprofit sector with the ability to evaluate and make actionable recommendations to the President & CEO. 
  • Experience should include legal, audit, compliance and budget. 
  • Technologically savvy with ability to work with IT staff to develop and implement new processes and systems that increase the efficiency in a fast-moving environment. 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of investments and transactional management of endowments and investment funds. 
  • Experience managing staff, including regular progress reviews and plans for improvement. 
  • Demonstrated aptitude in learning and maneuvering accounting systems 
  • Understanding of GAAP and practical application of the principles 
  • Excellent Written and Verbal Communication Skills 
  • Decision-making and problem solving skills 
  • Leadership skills with the ability to delegate, motivate, and inspire team members 
  • Honesty and integrity 
  • Ability to manage time effectively 
  • Supervisory experience required 
  • Minimum five years of high level business and financial management 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • MUST BE VACCINATED AGAINST COVID 19 
  • Position requires long period of sitting, occasional walking and standing.  Work requires heavy computer use.   

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Accuracy in all aspects of work is critical for this position.  Attention to detail while doing somewhat repetitive work is required.
